Road Tax

Well I worked it out and I was getting about 32mpg so I drove over a hundred miles on one trip leaving until dial was practically off the gauge and seem to goes below E by quite some bit. So it worked out at about 120 miles to a tank. :)

Never got it looked at. :o

Your fuel tank is 7.5 gallons. You should be able to do 240ish miles per tank at at that economy.

You wasted so, so much time in petrol stations :(

Road tax was one reason why I sold my Clio and down graded engine size to a Toyota iQ. Even better when you factor in the possibilities of driving into London Central without paying CC.

And what's with the pre-pay and bilkings? I don't get the problem. Drive up to petrol station, pay at pump when brimmed, drive off. What pre-pay?!

I think by pre pay they mean when you go to the cashier and before you fill up with any fuel, you pay a certain amount, say £30 and then go back to pump and fill £30s worth. :o

Seriously?!

Pay @ Pump works fine; I personally don't usually carry £40 cash as I use cards and only have a tenner in wallet unless I am going somewhere I know plastic isn't accepted (e.g. Food Fair).

Don't see the point in pre-pay.

Does this actually exist? It's a bloody awful system with far too much faff if you ask me.

For those who for some bizarre reason need to fill up 'a tenners worth', half the pay at pump machines now have this fixed amount button which does that for you.

In reality you should just learn to budget or get a credit card, but you know, old habits die hard.

I did it the other day at a small local run petrol station, in fact the only reason I did it is I wasn't sure exactly how much was in bank account at that moment in time so wanted to check first instead of being declined after filling. Never seen it prepay before either.

Get a credit card :p

VED bothers me because it's based on a load of unproven tosh. It should be wiped out and then rolled into the cost of fuel. Those who use the roads the most would then contribute the most, and it would encourage more fuel efficient cars, which is a win for everyone.

Royally pees me off that if you buy a hybrid car or one with very low emissions you pay no road tax

Why!! Road tax has always been for the upkeep of the roads. I dont care if you drive a hairdryer powererred toyota/honda your still using the roads creating wear.

Also why havnt we got a national rollout of prepay at petrol forecourts? It would stop bilkings overnight

I don't pay any road tax for my electric bike - and I can use the roads all I like.

<can of worms>

Road tax is retarded.

The Westfield that's in the garage has done a total of 6000miles in 10years. Most of those miles were on private race circuits rather than the public highway.
The 5 Series Diesel that's on the driveway does eleventy million mies a year up and down the motorway wearing out the roads, and emitting lots of lovely diesel particulates and carcinogens.

The car that puts out more emissions, the car that puts out the worse kind of emissions, the car that does more miles on the public highway... pays less road tax .

IMHO they should scrap road tax and put more tax on fuel instead. By putting it on fuel it's dead simple in that the more fuel you use = more tax you pay. Worse economy car = more fuel used. More miles traveled = more fuel used.

prepay exists all over europe

you get no fuel until you've paid some money i dont get whats not to understand....

as for bilkings leading to other things cars used for bilkings are typically also used for other crimes.

Ditto - my Westfield was taxed beginning of July after being Sorn'd for 10 months - it's driven 90 miles since then. Cosworth did 2k miles last year. That's 21 pence per mile in road tax alone across both vehicles.

I've only come across it in the Greek isles, where they also have someone employed to then fill it up for you. And even then, you don't actually pay first, you ask for a certain amount of fuel and then pay.

Never come across prepay in France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Italy......

Does it? I have just got back from a European road trip doing just under 2800 miles through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Swtizerland, Italy and France and not had to prepay once. Pay at the pump with card yes but not prepay.
