Virgin Media Discussion Thread

t3timeouts.jpg

Just noticed that these T3 timeouts seem to keep appearing in my log files. Is this anything to be concerned about or is this another firmware glitch?

Just had the virgin engineer install the superhub (free 20Mb to 60Mb upgrade)

Tried a speedtest and the hub rebooted straight away but been stable since. My speed tests show the download as rather inconsistant:

Broadbandspeedchecker: 3 tests
Down: 16.22, 15.92, 15.79
Up: 2.73, 2.76, 2.73

Speedtest:
Down: 52, 34, 30
Up: 2.9, 2.8, 2.8

ThinkBB:
Down: 21.6, 56.8, 56.1
Up: 2.8, 2.8, 2.8

Not sure what to make of it yet or if I'll use the hubs wireless or just shove it in modem mode and use my trusty netgear router

just running a few test now i'm back home. I've read that the London server hosted by Namesco is best for speediest so i've ran a couple.

results are quite convincing really so maybe i shouldn't worry too much about my line jitter or switching back to my old VM modem!?

all these test were run via wifi from my macbook pro.

I've also run a few tests using my PC via my 200mbps 10/100 homeplugs. It's clear my homeplugs are restricting my PC receiving my full 100mb internet.

Has anyone in the Barnsley area (area ref 14) been having issues over the past week? I've been experiencing extremely bad packet loss, pings and connection drops. I reported this to VM early this week and had a technician booked for today but didn't show and when I queried it, was told it's a local issue and the appointment was cancelled (without notice I may add).

I'm not sure if I'm being jerked around by their support or not. If anyone with more experience can give me some opinions on my stats it would be much appreciated:

They've asked me for my security answer before when I've called, but this has been no different to when I've called Sky or O2 in the past.

Never been asked for the actual password which I use to login myself though.

Makes no difference. The password is not your account password as stated but a security password that you set up on the account. Much like when you call up to speak to customer services from almost all major organisations do. The guy having a rant is a ******* who doesn't know what he is talking about.

If they didn't have this password anyone could ring up and pretend to be the account holder.

Consider this scenario.

Someone has been sifting through your garbage at night and have managed to get hold of your bank details. They have your name, address, telephone number and other vital information that they have stolen from you.

They call you up or post a forged VM card through your door stating that there is a telephone fault in the area and your phoneline will not function correctly for the next 24 hours.

They then call up VM and give them your vital info but VM do not ask for the security password. they then get your landline diverted to their mobile number.

They then complete several large transactions from your bank account to a scam account. The bank call you up on your landline to verify the transaction. The scammer answers on their mobile and approves the transaction since the bank believe they have called you.

Hey presto they a £3000 richer and you just got scammed
