Basically, I can get one for £98 and was wondering whether it would be a good buy for a friends computer. I was going to go with an i3 2120 for £90, but I spotted this and thought it might be worth considering. I will admit that I don't really know much about AMD CPUs since I have mainly had Intel based systems, so I am not really familiar with the different sockets and chipsets for AMD (Ie difference between AM3+ 800 series and 900 series etc). I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the motherboard section, because if the 1045T is indeed a good purchase, I was looking for guidance on a suitable motherboard for around £50. Not looking for anything too fancy, but SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0 and 4 RAM slots would be nice (most 1155 boards with 4 Dimms tend to be over the £50 mark). CFX/Sli support isn't really necessary but would be nice (can't expect much for £50 though). Thanks :)

Not for 98 quid it's not a good buy.
Would blow in a gaming situation versus the 2120 for the majority of games.
But in highly threaded situations would be the better CPU.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it will be used for general browsing and some gaming (mainly minecraft but perhaps some other games as well). He's on holiday at the moment so I can't ask him in more detail, but he makes a few YouTube videos occasionally, perhaps using screen recording when playing MC.

Yeah, I was thinking that it might be a bit much, £98 for an 1100T would probably be good but for a 1045T not so much. I think the only option at this price point is the 2120, since I assume the X4's aren't worth £85?

Indeed, I was surprised at how good even the SB Pentiums are- considering the G620 is only £50. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a 2120 then, as an added bonus I'm far more familiar with Intel CPUs and chipsets than AMD.

I don't think £98 is too much at all and I have a Core i3 2100 myself. If you are gaming then, the Core i3 is better.

If you are looking for something with decent multi-threaded power on the cheap,it is a better choice than a Phenom II X4 and also has a 95W TDP too. One of my mates(not much of a gamer) needed a cheap rig to run VMs and a few multi-threaded applications(probably more niche usage TBH) and it is far better than my Core i3 2100 at those sorts of things.

the 1045T is an oem based CPU so its completely locked down and can't be overclocked. sure the i3 can't be either, but its much faster in almost everything.

I'd wait it out for a bit anyway, the ivy bridge I3 is rumored to hit the shelves on the 2nd September.

The 95W Phenom II X6 1045T has been available in retail for almost a year. I used one for a non-gaming build last year and you can overclock it a decent amount too(people have got it to around 4GHZ from the stock 2.7GHZ clockspeed) if that floats your boat. The 95W Phenom II X6 1055T was known to be a decent overclocker too, going by the various threads on forums. However, you will need decent cooling for the higher clockspeeds.

Moreover,I compared my Core i3 2100 with the Phenom II X6 1045T - its faster for things like gaming but for certain tasks the Phenom II X6 is a decent amount faster.

Locked multiplyer. You can OC with FSB (or whatever its called (HT link clk?)).

IB dual cores should be the nuts; higher clockspeeds from what little I know. Really annoyed that they are all going to be locked.

Well when it comes to the AMD i can vouch for the 965BE. Its around £90 and has me maxing out games with my HD6970. It is a bottle neck and doesnt have the power of the i5's at all, it may have around the same power as a i3-2120 maybe, maybe. Still an all round CPU though. I play games, do 3D rendering and also render Videos.

This is with a somewhat strong card though but at least it performs well. I think Intel is the better choice, if not for just sheer performance difference but its slightly more future proof. The i3's also have Hyper threading and Turbo-Boost so thats a bonus.

To add my sig says my new equipment. I jumped the gun a bit but everything's already been ordered so it 50% counts. so im still running this 965BE :P
