Disagree with OP as well, smoker for almost 8 years now. Never been addicted so far, just smoke for the taste of it, sometimes 1-2 cigs a day, sometimes none, sometimes more.

Steve Mcqueen gave up smoking in 1978 due to ill health however his death was linked to asbestos. My dad smoked most of his life and I would say he is about 5 years short having to use oxygen.
