playbook worth a punt for teenage daughter ?

I have the Playbook and Nexus. Earlier this morning I was recommending the Playbook over the Nexus as it was for Audio/Video consumption. In this case I'll go the other way.

As she's a teenager she's going to want lots of apps. Particularly the ones that her peers are talking about. Spend the extra and get the Nexus in my opinion. With the Playbook its not just the lack of apps its often the cost. An app that might cost 60p on android or ios might be a few quid on the playbook. IIRC Angry Birds is £5.

How easy is it to get xvid dvd backup's playing on these?

I've got my entire dvd / bluray collection backed up and would love one of these as media travel companion for sd content.

The Playbook has played just about every video file I've thrown at it with the stock app.

Well I think that the hardware and software on the playbook are awesome, its a very fast piece of kit. And the multitasking on the tablet is the best I've seen to date

The only thing that let's this tablet down is app availability

I just got a 64GB PlayBook and absolutely love it. It gets more usage day-to-day than my laptop now. I think it's amazing value and is excellent at what I want it to do - Web browsing, playing music and video and storing and viewing photos. I've managed to store (literally) all of my photos, music and video on it with space to spare. It's very well built and looks great in a leather journal case. My sister bought one today and is very happy with it.

LOL hilarious absolutely hilarious.

Why is it hilarious? People are barely developing for the Playbook at all anymore. It's dead Dave.

Fine if you want is as a cheapish media player but even then I'd spend the extra for a Nexus 7 or another Android tablet.

You got any proof that people arent developing for the playbook??. Sure its not as popular to develop for the playbook than say the ipad or android tablets but to say its dead is absolutely hilarious. There are plenty of apps being developed for the playbook. Maybe not the same quality as the ipad or android apps but they are being developed.

I can't prove a negative - have you got any proof 'plenty of developers' are still developing for the platform? I don't see why his comment was 'LOL HILARIOUS' that's all.

To help you out a bit - what new games are due out on the Playbook soon?

BB10 is coming to the playbook, once it's ready.

I love mine, perfect for browsing the net and watching videos, there are plenty of games to choose from too.

The app store is lacking but hopefully it will pickup with BB10.

I picked one up in the "purple store" bank holiday mega-deals sale (price is going back up now IIRC).

64GB for £129, plus the 3-year "no quibble" insta-replacement warranty for £32, I'm happy.

129 quid for a media player of that quality is a good deal. Throw in the fact there are actually SOME decent apps and good browser/email/calendar etc. it starts to look brilliant. I'm almost tempted to get another one. 64gb provides more space for episodes of Thomas the Tank engine and films for me. My 16gb is full.

Wow, I've finally found someone who bought one of those warranties. :)

I never usually bother (infact I've never bothered with an extended warranty before), but after talking it through with the manager (to get my head around what will happen when the playbook is no longer available anywhere), it made sense.

If it breaks in 12 months time and the playbook is no longer on sale, I'll get another well-branded tablet of the same capacity (hello £129 iPad?).

As tempting as it is, I have resisted. I ended up amassing 6 tablets through firesales (Playbook included previously).

Sold all of them bar the iPad and Nexus 7.

Wow didn't realise these were so cheap now.

Been meaning to pick something up to use for slipping in a bag when going away, used to have an old netbook but wanting to replace it.

First thought of an Air, but then that's another laptop in the house that'd only be used for going away so seems an expensive solution. Then thought well an iPad would do, which it would, but still pretty pricey if you start increasing the storage.

Only downside could be the screen size, it's main uses would be for web browsing and some media duties when traveling and away. Got a 12 hour flight coming up and although the plane has plenty of movies showing this could be handy to take for whilst I'm there rather than carting my personal laptop with me as well as my work one.

This isn't much different from your legal rights, and how they'd act when you mention them.

It's vastly different from your statutory rights. Not that your statutory rights wouldn't end up getting you a repair or refurbished replacement mind, but I'll never end up with anything other than a brand new product straight off the shelf there and then.

Have to say I'm a big android fan and have been looking at tablets for a while, had a look at the PlayBook but didn't think it would suit me..... I was wrong and I'm using one right now, lol. Loaded a few "android" apps on it via DDPB and it brilliant.

If you are thinking about getting, do it!!!!
