Ok so i am pricing up my next upgrade and i am looking at getting a whole new system but i want to have a go at some 3d gaming, with my budget i can only really do this if i go for a gtx670 as the cost involved in getting the asus 27" 3d vision kit takes me up to my limit. What i want to know is if anyone is doing this right now and what kind of performance they are seeing.

My other option is to leave the 3d gaming and go for a gtx680, i will not be gaming any higher than 1920x1080 so i know both cards should handle everything i throw at them fully maxed

any advice anyone ?
has anyone been dissapointed with the fps they are getting in 3d with a gtx670 ?

Cheers in advance

Well there isn't much in it between the 670 and 680 so you'll be fine for 3D with a 670.
I 3D with a 680 @1920x1080 and it easily handles the latest games athough there are some games you might have to tone down a little to get consistantly high frame rates.
Just overclock the 670 and you'll be laughing.

thanks for that spanking, do you know what games, from your experience i would have to tone down, after spending the kind of money i am looking at i dont really want to be toning anything down

cheers

Games i have had to tone down.. FSX but still nearly maxed out, Dirt 3, BF3, note that the toning down is only slight and visualy you wont really see a difference. Some games work better than others and I much prefer BF3 without 3D anyway. Most games are not optimised to use 3D anyway but if it don't work well in a particular game just turn it off.

Don't be put off the 3D thing though as most games will play maxed with 3D and the effect is stunning, you really will not be too bothered if a particular good game in 3D has to be toned down slightly as the 3D effect outweighs any slight loss in detail.
You could also try just leaving the games maxed and just come down on the AA

I have the Asus VG278H monitor on my 680 but prior to the 680, I had it on a 560TI which worked flawlessly. The 670 is more than enough and I can't speak highly enough about the monitor and 3D gaming in general (Buy Trine 2 also).

do you have to tone the settings down on your 680 also ?

From what I have seen I think I will really love the 3d side of things. Another question if you dont mind, which monitor do you have - I am currently looking at the 27" asus and the 24" benq.

Cheers

thanks for this - I have heard nothing but great things about trine 2 - really looking forward to that as well as playing dead space 2 again

No probs. I played through a few of my older games just to see what they looked like (Tomb Raider/Fallout 3/Crysis/Half life) and I am glad I did. It is like playing different games again. BF3 in 3D is poo IMO (MP) and I get owned. I wasn't overly happy with FSX either but maybe I am being picky. The effects of Trine 2 though are just amazing. Impossible to explain except maybe playing in a fish tank.

FPS games are generally the ones that need the quality turned down but they are unplayable in 3D to me anyway because of distance blurring.

It works best for something like Trine or maybe RTS style games. Dirt Showdown is passable in 3D using a controller and sitting far back from the monitor, and I can max the settings without issue but it's more a novelty than something that improves upon the standard game.

I bought a 2nd hand kit because I already had the monitor and for 50 Euro it's not a big loss for something I'd try for a couple of hours every month. To intentionally spend a couple of hundred on a 3D setup would be insane to me.

Maybe it's good for movies but I haven't figured out how to get the software to work for that.

I am a Cinema goer (with my daughter) and I also buy the 3D films. The active shutter system that I use far out weighs the passive system that I see in the Cinema.

+1 for active shutter glasses.

Although dont use them with low energy lightbulbs on in the room, the flickering of the lightbulbs and the flickering of the glasses gives me a headache after a while.

Its fine with no lights on though :)

Nice and dark for films :)

The Asus VG278H is "The Nuts" and I can't praise it enough. A word of warning though...Some people just can't get on with 3D without feeling sick...Make sure you are not one of them, as it is a lot of money to chuff up to be ill (sounds like a good Saturday night) :D The Lightboost is what puts it above the competition IMO as other 3D setups I have seen are too dark.

Very good. I read it was poor in 2D (or not so good) . My other Monitor (which is now my wifes) is a Lliyama pro lite which got great reviews and my picture is far crisper than the 24" Lliyama. I adjusted saturation slighltly from the settings and colours now look deep.

I've been using 3d with my gtx670 for a few months now, at 1080p i played crysis 2 maximum edition and metro 2033 all the way through at highest settings, loved it, metro was like a new game again even though it was my third play through!. Just got a blu ray player aswell and only watched one film but it worked great.
