Number plate spacing

So I'm buying a number plate which is essentially 5 characters in the following format:

R1 KBZ

Does anyone have any first hand experience or knowledge about whether I'd have problems if I had the space taken out so that it would read:

R1KBZ

?

I'v had a quick google and there appear to be people who are being stopped by the police a lot for incorrect spacing but the ones I'v read about have more unorthadox spacing.

I am aware of what the "official" rules are, but I'm sure I'v seen loads around in the past where they've just taken the space out. Is it really that much of a problem?

If they (the police) are bored you'll get pulled and get a fine and a producer to change the plate and prove its correct.

Otherwise you will probably see no trouble. Get caught several times and the plate can be taken away.

I wanted mine with no spacing e.g. B6XBY but was heavily urged to do the legal thing and get B6 XBY... Up to you but is it really worth it?

Depends, if the car is totally legal and you never speed or fart in the wrong direction then you could never get pulled however you have just given the police an excuse to pull you over at any point in time whenever.

Your choice

I wouldnt bother with that. Unless somebody knows all 5 of your initials it would look like a regular plate to anyone. Probably only relatives know all 5. If you want a personalised plate, why not go for something like a nickname that people know you by.

My folks have a plate with illegal spacing on it but the other way, they've stuck an extra space or 2 in to separate the prefix from the 3 initials a little. Doesn't look horrific but I'd be just keeping it standard.

Get caught several times and the plate can be taken away.

There is a system whereby when you are first caught and reported to the DVLA they will send you a letter asking to you change the plate to a legal one and for photos to check. If you get caught a second time and are reported to the DVLA, they with issue you a new plate and withdraw the old one. There isn't any compensation for this, even if you spent several £K on it in the first place.
