If so what was your experience like regarding the assessments and process etc? I have been advised by JSA that I should look into claiming ESA instead which is why I'm asking, never even knew of this until now!

Unless you're absolutely certain you will pass assessment by ATOS as unfit to work, you'd be better off avoiding the hassle and staying on JSA - this from personal experience about two years ago.

It is almost impossible to pass a Thanatos assessment without professional or experienced help.

In Greek mythology, Thanatos was the daemon personification of death. HA it pretty much fits what the government hopes will happen to people wanting ESA.

In what way? My consultant psychiatrist will be writing to them. I am being advised by a charity group set up to deal with this exact thing as well.

I had a heart attack and have had many ongoing problems since, i had an assessment 6 weeks ago with the governments own medical staff and i got a letter today stating i needed atleast 15 points to be considered for ESA, i got 0 points, i had to go to see my GP yesterday and told him about it, he still considers me unfit for work, i have filled the appeal forms in and i am waiting to see now what happens.

I do want to work but various issues that i wont go into stop me at the moment, but the way they treat people who are genuinely unfit for work is appalling imo and they make things so hard or complicated.

My friend has lung cancer

I'm not commenting on any specific cases here, I don't know or care about anyone's personal circumstances.
What I will say is that it absolutely should be hard to get paid for not doing anything.
The country's knackered and it's a fact that if we didn't pay for houses, shopping, free health care etc for people who don't provide for themselves and don't contribute to the costs of the NHS etc, then we would be much better off.

I'm not saying there should be no benefits at all, but I will say that it should be thoroughly assessed and only dished out to those who truly are completely incapable of providing for themselves.

EDIT: This isn't a comment on anyone in this thread, I don't know any of your circumstances well enough to have an opinion.
Just a comment on our economy and the importance of looking out for those who contribute over those who would rather not.

Chris that's fair enough until you feel like your treated like the scum that claim when there is nothing wrong with them at all and drink half a bottle of whisky before going for the assessment and pass it as an alcoholic, i am aware of people who do this, people who are genuinely unfit are all thrown in with the one's who are not, it would be easier for me to do the above but that is not right.

From what I can gather atos fail everyone at first, and then sort out whether the person is actually sick later. The testing process takes ages, I appealed last October and still haven't had my hearing, they are saying maybe December now.

The whole thing has made my health much worse.

This 100 times this.

You have to apply again, then they might take you seriously.

my bro has lost sight in his dominent eye and loosing sight in the other, he went to the gp to get a doctors note, the doctor said he could still do a job like licking envelopes if he did go blind and wouldnt sign him off :(

theres a difference between someone who is blind from birth and some1 who lost his sight in his thirty's

he was a forklift driver / superviser at the time.

He's on esa atm but it took him a year to get there, sometimes its easier to just go on/stay on jsa.

I currently get ESA and Tbh it was really simple and hassle free to claim. I had one medical and was awarded £75 a week from this. My medical was with atos I believe.

I suffer from bowel disease and was discharged from the forces because of this so went armed with all my forces medical reports war and RAF pension info and was there about 10 mins.

I received a letter about 2 weeks later showing what I would be getting. I have never seen any points on anything just unfit for work statements.

I don't have to have any other medicals but after 12 months of claiming I have to be re-assessed I think.

Atos are killing 35 people a week with these crooked assessments. Also 44 of the doctors and nurses employed by atos are under investigation by their respective professional bodies, says a lot!

I have throat cancer with complications and an extreme reaction to the radiation therapy, pronounced fit for work. A neighbour who is suffering from stress, (whatever that is) passed the test, if that is the right phrase and is not fit for work according to ATOS.
