Supermarket / Budget Sofas

Afternoon all,

I need to buy some reasonable looking sofas on a budget. I'm actually shocked at how much it all costs, having never had to buy any before, although I am keeping an eye on gumtree.

Does anyone have any experiences of buying from Asda or Tesco etc? They are within budget but I don't fancy sitting on an absolute rock. Also, if anyone can suggest any other online dealers that would be great.

Also, I'm well aware you get what you pay for with furniture and I would love to spend a lot of money on something plush, but I can't so it's out of the question.

Many thanks :)

Try Freecycle as well?

DFS must have a sale on at the moment, with it having just been bank holiday weekend - not sure how this works budget wise though.

Otherwise Ikea seems like the best place to bet on, it normally is for 'cheap' furniture.

Argos also seems to have quite a few fabric sofas <£200 (well one style, multiple colours)

Budget would no doubt help ;p

I really wouldn't get a supermarket sofa, uncomfortable and they won't last. If you can't afford to buy new, look for second hand. I sold a large corner couch which cost £1k new for £200 on eBay when I moved house, still in perfect nick and the comfiest sofa I ever did know :(

Sadly, I didn't see anything I liked in Ikea. I'm looking to get three 2-seater sofas or two 3-seater sofas for ~£500.

Thanks again.

DFS' entire business model is based on the premise of an establishment/crash pricing model and should be avoided.

Nitefly, you won't want to hear this but it's true : good, comfortable furniture does not come from Supermarkets.

Go second-hand but good second-hand. It'll be the same price as brand new garbage from Tesco or whoever but will actually be made from something other than sawdust.

I'm well aware that whatever we get it won't be the comfiest of things. The problem with second hand is that I end up playing the waiting game of seeing what is available whilst having nowhere to sit, plus I have no transport to collect such goods.

When we first moved into our place we bought two £199 tesco 3 seater sofas as we had no money left. Started to look a bit tatty after 5 years or so, so stuck a throw on them; finally replaced them after 10 years. No structural issues, and I never thought "this isnt comfy", so I'd happily do the same if circumstances required.

Have you tried nabru? http://www.nabru.co.uk/ I ordered a large corner sofa and built it in under 2 hours.

Its very comfy and nice and sturdy. It cost around £600. I can get some pictures tonight if you would like to see them.

I've just had a look on the website, never heard of them before, might be worth a punt! It's the top end of our budget range really. I assume it's essentially flat pack furniture?

It won't be necessary to take pictures, but thanks for the offer :)

Yes, it arrives on a pallet and you construct it, its essentially an MDF frame that slots together.

If you can't afford to spend 1k +, go second hand. Local auction rooms, charity shops etc. I recently moved into my first house and couldn't justify spending that amount of money on my budget. If you manage to find a good quality sofa but it looks a bit tatty, well, if the fabric and frame are intact you can get it steam cleaned and re-stuffed.

I ended up with a sofa that originally cost over 2.5k but had been sat in the back of a garage for 10 years. A trip to the reupholster and a few hundred quid later, it looks quite nice and is lovely and comfy :).

Watch out for crap scs / dfs stuff in the second hand market. Some people pay thousands for pieces of furniture that are the same quality as Argos.
