The guy couldn't swim, unfortunately I caught a few of the DM comments(from google news) who were slating the guy for not being able to swim, got to say though I'm not big on defining people as heroes but this guy is definitely something special to do what he did.

Had to post this....

Link? I presume his son survived because of his father's aid. If his father jumped in and drowned without doing anything then he's not really a hero.

A perfect place for a 7 year old to be

Non-swimmer or not, I think most people reaction would be to get the child - its just whether you can keep a level enough head to realise that jumping in after them may not be the best course of action is a different thing.

I'm a PADI Rescue Diver and all through qualifying and subsequently through training we are always taught to ensure our own safety is paramount and never do ANYTHING to put yourself at risk to save someone. Thankfully I've yet to be in a situation where I have to make that decision but should I have been in his situation I'd have struggled to not go in after my own child..... although by the same token I'd have not allowed my child any further down than the hand railings.

Yes Tragic, and i can't blame the father for trying to save his own son, but 1) Why the hell couldn't he swim and 2) What posessed him to let his son play there???

Seems to be a lot of people drowning lately =/

I think it is just a phase the media is going through rather than actual number of people drowning increasing. Remember the big motorway pileup on bonfire night? After that anyone slightly bruised in a car crash was front page news.

I was a decent swimmer when I was in my teens and did all the various survival and lifeguard swimming courses.

As a bystander if I was there and had my fitness I had then I can't deny it would be hard not to try and jump in and help, especially as its a young child, but all my training would be screaming 'you are mental.' it would be as close to suicide as possible to try that.

People dont seem to understand how strong sea currents can be, that does not look like an environment id want to be getting into.

Even saying that, I've heard of people drowning jumping into canals to save people and breaking their legs on a trolley under the waters surface.

Tragic incident, but sadly avoidable :(
