As title, if one was to compare an ipad3, with its superior gfx to the ipad2, to a pc of yesteryear, what sort of processing and gfx capabilities are we equivalent to?
I know its a different OS, but i see a collection of rpg style games emerging for the ipad, and wondered just where in the history of pcs the tech is equivalent to.

It is very hard to compare directly as the Ipad is a deferred renderer tile based chip. The last decent PC tile based card was the Kyro II SE. But the ipad is way past a Kyro II SE. I think the Ipad 3 specs are around 32.0 GFLOPS, 200 MTriangles and 4000 MPixel/s

EDIT: (1000 Mpixel for 1 core at 200mhz. I assumed 4 cores means 4000 MPixel/s and the new Ipad got bumped up to 250mz I bealive) Same for 200 MTriangles. 1 core at 200mhz is 40MTriangles so 4 cores at 250mhz = 200MTriangles?)

32 gflops, i think thats a bit less than a low power i3, but thats still quite a bit for a handheld tablet device.
Interesting, I guess it depends on the OS and the ram and stuff but it should be capable of quite a lot.

I was not very clear in my post, sorry about that. 32 gflops is for the GPU, I have no idea what the CPU is.

For gaming:
It's roughly the same as a 6th gen console (XBOX/PS2) or DX8 PC from around ~2002.

For general compute:
The CPU is similar to a 1.6GHz Intel Atom (Netbook)

I have a Netbook with a 1.6GHz ATOM Chip also own XBOX, PS2 and the New iPad feels and looks far more powerful than these. Games Like N.O.V.A. 3 and Modern Combat 3 looks as good as anything on PS3 and 360. Just a shame Apple don't allow BT Joypads.

I think the Ipad 3 is much closer to Xbox360 then Xbox1. Still behind Xbox360 mind you but that will change next gen when it will leap ahead of Xbox360 from a GPU point of view. The Ipad 2/3 is more DX10/11 level not DX8 from a features point of view.

There's only a handful of games that use the Ipad 3's gfx to the full extent. Dead Trigger is a perfect example.
