Synology DiskStation Manager 4.1 final is out

I was on DSM 3.2 and upgraded to this just now, and now both my Seagate ST31000524AS drives are showing SMART fail on seek error rate.

Anyone else come across this?

Edit: Ignore the above, just downgraded to DSM 3.2 and it's still reporting the error, it just hadn't emailed me for some reason. Looks like failing HDDs, RMA time!

I am not even on 3.2, do you guys do any kind of backup before upgrading or do you just put it straight on? Don't have the storage space to backup my backup area.

I just stick it on. It *shouldn't* affect /volume1

I updated mine last night and for some reason it wanted to recreate all the thumbnails for photo station... cue about 2 hours of HDDs churning away at full chat

Installed the update the other day. Like the idea of the new Video Station. Shame it doesn't work very well at the moment. Needs a few more features to make it usable, and I don't think anyone in the UK can have beta tested the recorder.

They seem to have missed that not all channels in the UK air 24/7, and when you do a scan it deletes all the old channels, so you're not going to get a full TV listing.

The EPG doesn't seem to work very well either. 1/2 the channels have little/no information so you can't set much up to record, and it doesn't seem to be being updated properly either.

The Movie/TV Shows section needs a much better search feature. You can spend ages trawling through to find the right show if it hasn't picked up the right one (which it quite frequently hasn't on my collection).

I'm sure they'll fix it over time, but it's certainly not going to replace my HTPC at the moment.

What USB TV stick are you using as I want to get one and play about :)

I bought a Kworld UB499-2T USB (dual tuner) as it's on Synology's supported list. DSM 4.1 only currently sees it as a single tuner, but I did manage one successful recording as a test. Haven't bothered since as the EPG data doesn't seem to be updating very much.

Thanks for the info mate. What was the what quality of the picture like in HD?
Hold on Freeview HD is T2 is it not and synology don't support T2 yet :(

My disk 4 failed too, but to be fair it had been temperamental for a couple of weeks prior to the upgrade, but I had to rebuild mine after the upgrade! I have replaced the disk, ran Segate diags and it did report a failed device (put it into my PC to do so) so suspect it was just coincidence.

No, you won't get HD out of it. As you rightly pointed out it's not a T2 device ... AND Synology don't support it :)

Quality for non-HD. Seems to be pumping out a standard Mpeg 2 file. Can't see any difference from the software I currently use and Video Station.

Issues I have with it at the moment:

  • It's only seeing one tuner
  • The EPG doesn't seem to be updating properly
  • The recorder's very basic. It'll only let you record one channel on one tuner, unlike a lot of software that'll let you record as many as you like if it's on the same multiplex.

Last one is just an irritation for me as I'm used to software that does more. The whole Video Station package is very basic, but it depends what you want it for really. If you just want it to record, it seems to do that - for me at least. I've seen people on the Synology forum complaining they're getting 0kb files.

I'm sure they'll improve it over time.

There's one other problem I've seen people talking about. I've ripped a load of my DVDs to the NAS in DVD format (VIDEO_TS), but since the 4.1 update, loads of people seem to be having problems playing them (me included) ... using various different bits of software. Not sure what's going on there.

Been using the new dsm 4.1 for a couple of days now and I'm quite impressed, especially with the video station. Sure it's not very well polished off at the moment and bugs exist (my epg is quite temperamental described Infidelus above) but its a great feature.

I was planning on using my Rpi with tvheadend or similar (I probably still give it a try to see which I prefer) but the ability to plug in a DVB dongle (my v.old freecom stick works!!!!) and record straight to my nas is brilliant.

Just had a reply from Synology support about a couple of Video Station issues I raised.

Apparently, even though they list a couple of dual tuners on their supported list, they only currently support single tuners ...

(paraphrasing) They don't at the moment seem to understand that the UK has channels that don't air 24/7 and so don't see the problem with deleting the current channel list when doing a rescan. Hopefully they'll implement a scan of the NIT table at some point else you'll never get a full lineup with Video Station.

Thanks for the info Infidelius I will be getting the MSI Stick next week.

Oh and the Android Video app will be out when DS 4.2 is out.

Hope this works, Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T USB Stick - DVB-T Digital freeview TV tuner stick, not the same model number on the Synology list but will post back and let people know

Yeah, read that on the Syno forum. Strikes me as odd that they'd release an IOS version first when both the DS and Android are Linux based. Surely it would have been much easier to release an Android version first.

Must be my cynical nature thinking they're just doing the Apple one first 'cos all the fanbois whine when they don't get what they want immediately :p

Doesn't bother me either way in reality though as I'm much more likely to watch anything I've recorded on an actual TV (or computer monitor) :)
