New PC Build - Advice/Recommendations Required

Hi all,

I have been out of the enthusiast game for a while now, last built a PC in 2005 however, I am now interested in building a PC with the following requirements:

- Be able to play online games at the highest settings e.g. Battlefield 3
- Video encoding - medium usage
- Video editing - minor usage

I already have a 24" Samsung monitor but will be purchasing every other component.

Based on my requirements above, the obvious no brainer would be an i5 Processor however, like before, once I have built this PC, it is likely that I will not upgrade for at least another 5 years. Therefore, would I be better off going for an i7 instead with the above in mind i.e. future proofing it?

I will be overclocking using the built in BIOS features from the Motherboard and will be looking at a medium% overlock. I am aiming to keep temperatures low so perhaps I should be going for another HSF rather than the stock.

I was hoping if someone could spec me out a PC build please? Budget = £1500, the lower the better, ideally £1000.

Advice/questions appreciated :-)

Overclockable processor, 16GB of RAM, awesome cooler, blu-ray, SSD for OS + some apps, bigger hard drive for other games and data. If you wanted to spend more you could up the processor to an i7 but it would only help with rendering videos and the like, and as you say you don't do much I don't think it would be worth the premium.

I'd wait for Windows 8 to be released to buy an OS, you can use the release preview until then.

Edit: changed motherboard... some reviews on the other state there isn't much voltage control for overclocking, so i changed it to a different one.

Be hard to play BF3 online, without a Gpu.:D

I will be buying a new keyboard, mouse and speakers, sound card, and probably a gaming headset :-) If I can manage all this within £1000 i'll be very happy.

It is probably the best within that price range. If you want to go sli/xfire in the future, then you shoukd be looking at a sli/xfire capable mobo.

Motherboards...

I have been recommended a D3H and a UD5H in this thread.

I also understand there is a a UD3H.

Which one would be best suited for me? I'm interested in USB3.0 with the potential option to do SLI later in future but I don't think I will do this so don't mind a motherboard that does not have SLI capabilities. Remember, I am going for a medium% overclock, not a heavy overclock%.

In a nutshell, what is the main differences between these types of boards?
