Diet - uni style

Going to start uni in a couple of weeks. Need a diet that works for me. Of course, there's several 'parameters', within which the diet must be kept. I prefer the word parameters to the word 'restrictions', because that makes it sound like it will limit me in some way - which it won't

So it needs to be:

  • Vegetarian
  • Easily prepared foods
  • Few eggs (shame, but since 2009 everytime I eat eggs I get problems)
  • CHEAP!

The problem with buying cheap foods is that I imagine I run the risk of buying low quality, refined foods with a lot of crap in them.

Having had an early peak at my uni timetable, I reckon lunch will have to be a quick, light meal, due to the limited time I have. A typical day starts around 09.00 and can end anywhere between 15.00 and 18.00, though most tend to end closer to the latter. Weekends will obviously afford me some more time to eat and workout, though I'll have to get a job on weekends too.

I'm thinking that breakfast will be porridge along with a banana and maybe some yogurt and nuts too.

Lunch - pasta, with cheese, tomato sauce, and some coconut oil? If I have time I could prepare some salad too.

Dinner - Jacket potato with some oil, cheese, baked beans, and vegetables?

PWO snack - no idea. Most people here seem to have chicken along with some source of carbs. Obviously I need to find an alternative to this.

I'm also contemplating cutting for a while before bulking. This would ease me into my diet, it would be cheaper initially, and probably be easier for me while I find my feet during freshers and the first few weeks and months of uni. I'm only around 53 kg at the moment, but I could do with having less body fat. Good idea or not?

Thanks everyone

53kg and you want to cut  What are you 4 foot tall?

Abs on a skinny guy are like big **** on a fat chick.

Seriously just bulk, I thought the exact same as you then i realised i was just going to waste time and end up looking even smaller just to make myself feel good by having "abs"

5'5, with abs that I can't see anymore :(

When I first thought about cutting, I had exactly the same thought as you. "I'm a skinny bitch, do I have anything to cut?" But then I thought that it might not be such a bad idea.

I'm an inch taller than you and nearly twice your weight, I need to cut. You definitely do not and trying to cut while getting started at uni would be a lot more stressful than bulking as you don't have to be as strict on yourself.

i personally think you are at least 4-5 kg underweight for your height but we all have our own visions for our ideals. Id look at building some muscle and cutting fat for tone, abs are a nightmare for me im a similar height but weigh 65kg and im by no means fats if anything im toned although id like to lower my body fat and is something im working on id like to drop 2kg at most anything less and id feel like im wasting away.

Rofl, it's not that you can't see your abs, it's 'cause you don't have them yet  Get bulking brah, build those foundations, then cut back when you're weighed down with the sweet smell of bulging muscles and dripping wet bishes.

Im starting Uni too in the next week. I have set aside a rough budget of £35 at a max - i think i will have a surplus of certain items week to week so the cost should go considerably down! (roughly £10 of this will be spent on chicken which i hope to source fresh locally and £4-6 on Fish) a week - i plan to eat 3 meals a day excluding breakfast (as this is oats and dried fruit), these will be based on Chicken with Brown Rice/Sweet potatoes and a Veg source - i like my greens  and more relaxed fish meals on weekends. I think its important too when bulking and/or at university to cook and plan meals at the beginning of the week as if i am not eating correctly/ missing meals it renders a lot of the work at the gym pointless - so i think you should consider batch cooking meals to take with you so you do not miss something such as lunch. I have yet to place everything into an excel sheet but if anyone wishes to critique i am all ears and will post up .

I am curious how you will set out your diet as i do not wish to be too meat heavy myself and obviously cheap meal suggestions are great. I think being a vegetarian it would be focused around lentils and seeds (as what you posted up looks protein short and possibly calorie short aswell if you do decide to bulk as suggested) so if anyone has any cooking suggestions please post up!

I like to snack on sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds and cashews! a 200g packet can last afew days and are only a quid or two

Milk. Full fat stuff.
Find someone with a trade account at bookers or similar and buy milk in bulk :)

Ha no.

But don't limit food, eat regular and train regular.

Thats the science.

I bet you when you get to uni it will be mayhem in your first few month, I doubt you will be able to schedule yourself so much.

Too much partying to be had

Yeah that's why I had the idea of cutting rather than bulking at first, it would be a lot easier to schedule alongside the inevitable chaos of freshers.
