20% increase on supplements from Oct 1st

Looks like supplementers are going to have to switch to Meal Replacement Drinks, as they remain zero-rated.

I'm pretty sure I remember one of the retailers asking MRHA about doing this and they said they would still be forced to charge VAT.

HMRC Consultation Paper said:
4.4 Will meal replacement drinks for slimmers or invalids be affected?
No. Meal replacement drinks for slimmers and invalids will remain zero-rated as they are not advertised or marketed as products designed to enhance physical performance, accelerate recovery after exercise or build muscle bulk and do not fall within the 'similar drinks' category.

So if you've already binged on sports drinks, you won't get charged on your SlimFast.

If they had any sense they would have kept junk food zero rated and then slapped VAT on crap like slimfast to take advantage of the people who indulged in the junk food, they haven't thought this through!

I don't think the idea was to think it through, or to come up with anything remotely sensible. :(

Unfortunately, until people realise that by trying to eat and be healthy, we are subsiding the fatties to eat crud and moan over their tubs of Slim Fast.

BRB, ordering 3.8 tons of whey.

As an aside, how long does whey powder keep for?

Bloody ages if you don't keep opening the stuff, leave the tub/bag in sunlight etc.

Just incredibly stupid.

Hopefully there is some equally stupid loophole to get around it.

I suspect there will be: if you look at the specific shape of the legisaltion, they've tried to capture everything marketed as a sports nutrition drink, or something that can be made into a sports nutrition drink.

Things that a marketed as "weight loss support" products do not attract VAT. Go figure.

However, do you honestly think that companies who market supplements at massive markups and play on human delusions/desires will do the right thing and try and find those loopholes?

Nope - chances are MyProtein/BulkPowders/whatever will hoik 20% on their zero-rated "weightloss" supplements and give customers the Gallic strug and complain about "that VAT legisaltion."

This is a load of utter ****! People who are trying to stay fit and healthy and cost the country less by not having to be looked after by the NHS are getting charged. While you can save money and get fat/unhealthy by eating processed burgers with lots of different chemicals pumped into them.

So a 2.5kg of Protein which costs roughly £30 which is quite expensive already will go up to £36. No wonder people use Roids and other stuff! It works out cheaper! :-o

How so? If you want to get bigger then you have to eat. Gear or not, you have to eat. So gear + food v vat applicable supplements = sups win still i'm sure ;p

This is outrageous! What's the point in creatine such a pointless tax hike. Time to stock up from my suppliment supplying suppliers.

Hmm I now realised how daft that point is :D I was thinking of the avarage gym noob who juices and just eats everything in site (Junk or not) to get bigger.A few of the guys at my gym tend to do this and don't know anything about nutrition yet they are big swole and weak (for their size) :D

EDIT: I'm tired and just in. This news has really peed me off...
