MSI 7970 OC Artifacting

Yep as i expected. High leakage chips have a higher voltage, more power consumption.

The higher default voltage technically gives you more chance to get a higher overclock though providing you can keep it cool enough. You can go up to 1.3volts with a 1.175 chip.

7970's are built to operate between 80-85c, thats what an AMD rep on another enthusiast forum said.

Its easy to keep temps lower than that though. Its partly due to the lazy fan profile on the reference card.

EDIT Found what he said.

'7950 and 7970 have the same thermal threshold. I have five reference 7970s sitting here, and all of them go to 80-85C at load in a well-ventilated 650D.'

Below that he confirms this is using the lazy silent default fan profile.
Im so glad I found this thread. I've been worried about the temps on my card. Mine is a reference 7970. I used the auto profile which did see the temps go upto 82. I ended up using afterburner and setting up a profile for the fans, which put the temps down to 65-70ish.

The misses isnt happy though, more noise to put up with while watching eastenders. She was going to buy me the arctic hybrid for my birthday. But I opted for a AKai keyboard. And now reading this thread. Im not hurting my card when seeing temps that high if i opt to using the default fan profile to keep the misses happy.

Haha i know the feeling. You interrupt 'emmerdale' or 'corrie' with a loud reference fan and its off with your love spuds before any questions are asked.

I find this fan curve is a nice balance between noise and performance. Regardless of the game i play it keeps temps 75c or lower.

EDIT this is with a rather large overclock and voltage bump. If it was stock i could lower this a fair bit.

Feel free to drop me a trust if needed sam. Always up for comparing bits and bobs. (to clarify i mean gpu details before i get a naughty email from greg :p)

Not so sad about the card being DOA now, got a lot of useful info from this thread and my old 260gtx is still pulling its weight with the processor/ram/ssd upgrade.

I'm now actually wondering if i really needed a 7970, but for the 10 minutes that i ran a few games i couldn't go back to anything lower :D

I'm using this profile now, Its much quieter than the profile I had. Guild Wars 2 temps sitting nicely at 72c, Battlefield3 65c??? lower noise. Win win ;) Cheers
