Good friend, for Jesu's sake forbeare
To dig the dust enclosed here;
Blessed be he that spares these stones,
And curst be he that moves my bones.

Trivia fact - The Chichester Diocese refused to allow Spikes epitaph to be put on his headstone. Thus, a compromise was reached and it was inscribed in Gaelic- "Duirt me leat go raibh me breoite".

Not really an epitaph but I always loved that John Le Mesurier self penned his own death notice in The Times saying that he had "conked out" and that he "sadly misses family and friends".

Some from the wild west :

"Owen Moore, gone away, owin' more than he could pay."

"Here lies Les Moore,
Killed by two shots from a 44,
No Les, No Moore."

"Here lies Butch,
We planted him raw,
He was quick on the trigger,
But slow on the draw."

"He called Bill Smith a liar."

"I put my wife beneath this stone, for her repose and for my own."
