Bournemouth - the legendary peugeot 505 taxi driver, what engine?

Anyone else seen this guy driving around in the taxi, a Peugeot 505 with over 2 million miles on the clock.

I was wondering if anyone knew what engine he was running, I was half cut when I got in a few months ago and neglected to ask but it's been bugging me ever since!
Seems an extraordinary amount of miles for an old peugeot to have done.

well the last of the 505s were built between 1979 and 1992 so take your pick

but bloody fair play on getting 2 million miles out of it

To be honnest before modern high pressure fuel delivery systems and sensors everywhere there is mot much to go wrong with an engine, if they are fairly well looked after and not a high performance unit I could imagine most engines could quite easily cope with millions of miles. I have seen countless 500k+ old transits and sprinters.

The body and electrics of a 505 however....

Never mind the 505, my uncle still has a 504 which is his daily drive in Mombasa, East Africa, which when I saw and rode in it some 25 years ago had moon mileage on it then.
