The rise in energy prices over the past five years has been steep to say the least.

So we're in a detached house with 2 adults + 2 kids. This months quarterly bills we're:-
Electricity: £175.09 (1440 kWh)
Gas: £73.68 (97 units = 1063.59 kWh)

Total = £248.77

In full:-
Electricity (1440 kWh)
First 199 kWh x 23.285p = £46.34
Next 1241 kWh x 10.375p = £128.75
- £14.50 discount + vat (5%) = £175.09

Gas (97 units = 1063.59 kWh)
First 742.00 kWh x 8.428p = £62.54
Next 321.59 kWh x 3.465p = £11.14
- 60p discount + vat (5%) = £73.68

So how does that compare to other people's usage and price wise? (We're with British Gas)

ps: Obviously in Winter months our gas usage shoots up.

For just me and my GF in a 3 bed terraced I have literally received today a £115 combined bill.

Electricity £100.68
Gas £12.57

(+ vat before someone tries to point out a math fail)

But I currently do not have any gas central heating.

During the winter my bills are similar to yours at the moment.

we're a 2+1 (but wasteful!) in a big old detached house and our yearly bill is around £1300, with npower on gofix 11.

Our last four bills have been:-

Electricity
£175.09 28 May to 05 Sep 2012
£176.43 28 Feb to 27 May 2012
£215.15 25 Nov to 27 Feb 2012
£145.65 02 Sep to 24 Nov 2011
£712.32

Gas
£73.68 28 May to 05 Sep 2012
£153.80 28 Feb to 27 May 2012
£274.80 25 Nov to 27 Feb 2012
£111.66 02 Sep to 24 Nov 2011
£613.94

So total over last 12months = 1326.26

So I guess that isn't too bad!?

I don't know off the top of my head but Scottish Gas can kiss my arse.

Last year over the four q's ended up with a £350 credit, ask for a refund and payments go up... to the point where I'm being sent another cheque for £210. As a result, they are putting the payments up again..

Why do some private energy firms act as if they are entitled to force their customers to hold a credit with them?

They've just lost my business. :)

Electric is about £35 per quarter and gas is around £15. Don't use the heating much though so that's purely hot water. Winter months that will creep up to £40ish. 2 bedroom apartment with 2 people.

Edit - Herp derp my electric is £85 per quarter, must have mis-typed.

Gas is normally what they do this with. They want a regular payment, but of course your gas bill goes up/down dramatically. So leading into winter you're normally in credit by hundreds, and by the end of winter you've used most of it up.

My useage has been steady for years, it rarely changes and if anything marginally reduces each year even if by a fraction. The credits remain and build during winter periods also.

I've explained this, they acknowledge this, and say 'it's the computer'.

Yes, that's right darling the computer has a mind of its own.

My most recent bill indicates total annual usage is about £855/year, or about £71/pcm, for both gas and electricity combined. Compared to mrbell1984's usage, mine seems pretty high.

Our Gas is apparently now £83 a month! :(. I think it was about £60 odd a month but when they read the meter it was more usage than they estimated so they have now put it up. It doesn't sound right at all because we haven't been using the gas over the summer, apart from cooking.

Electric is about £50 odd per month, cant remember the exact amount.

Seems we are getting thoroughly ripped off is this thread is anything to go by. Its just a 3 bedroomed semi detached house with 3 adults living here.

So you're using about the same electric as us, and more gas, at least from a £ point of view. Might be worth you checking your unit usage again mine from the last quarter (listed in post #1)?

But he may be alone in a one bedroom flat, where as you may be in a detached house with three of you? Need to compare alike really? That's why I was asking ideally for 2.2 families in a house...

I think we are paying a similar amount per unit but I can't understand how we could have possibly been using this much gas in summer. The heating has been off, but its a 20 year old boiler and has a pilot light constantly lit with no way to turn it off. We also had a gas cooker, but have replaced with an electric now, so will have to check again next quarter.

Actually, just looking at that comparison from last year there is deffo something wrong as we haven't changed anything in terms of gas usage from last year. Is it possible gas meters can be reading wrong? Sorry to hijack, just never even gave it a second thought until i saw how little others were paying.

We changed our boiler a couple of years ago.
Comparing with our old (pilot always on) and our new one:-
Jan - Mar: 9000 vs 7000
Apr - Jun: 3000 vs 2000
Jul - Sep: 2000 vs 1200
Oct - Dec: 6800 vs 4300

Those are very approx figures...

But you can see the curve is basically the same pattern, just a lot higher with the old boiler...

That aside, you are using about 5 TIME more gas than I am now, and well over twice what my old boiler was using! WOW! You need to check that out! Sure you're not heating water all day?

and on another note I don't use much gas / elec because when I buy electronics I try to buy eco friendly devices and not use them as much.

Aside from the fridge, washer, shower n kettle, all I really use is my router / Homeplugs / iPad & Macbook air. :D
