i usually use something like a flannel or a sock (clean!) with a little aftershave or the wife's perfume on it as it contains alcohol and cuts through the stuff like a hot knife through butter.
"Brasso" gadget cleaner and kitchen roll. does the job perfectly well, and it's pretty cheap. says on the bottle that it removes grease, which probably helps in some way...
Brillo pad, cheese grater. An arc light burns it off nicely.
Persnoally Ive always found my tongue pretty effective, is free and requires no tools
When ive not been concerend with the 'perfect' paste application/mount ive always used a strong lint free kitchen towel. A bit of elbow grease gets it all off.
