Idiotic mistake - VENT!

Yeah, I know for certain the tyres need doing. Getting it in for a service next week where that'll be covered, and I'll ask them about the scrape fixing. If it's too much, I won't bother.

To be honest, I know it's an older car, and my first. Just more annoyed at myself than anything. A one-second check in the passenger mirror and it wouldn't have happened. Was too busy trying to make sure I wasn't going to clip the car occupying the driver-side space going in.

I think I'd be looking on the bright side here. Sure you scraped your car but at least it was a garage pillar and not someone elses car - it's daft and will cost you a bit of money to repair however you do it but it's a pretty minor thing and if it means you are more careful in future then that was probably worth the lesson.

Well more the fact that is a 2003 fiesta. If I had the same damage on my old 2004 lupo I wouldn't even bother repairing. It's old, it's not worth much and deffo not worth repairing in my eyes. That's not to say it's a **** car though.

This isn't sound logic. If you are keeping the car, £200 is worthwhile to keep it presentable and running for a longer period. By your logic, you'd buy cheap tyres, not service it etc, all of which will mean you need to spend MORE money replacing it prematurely!

I fixed and sprayed in a rusty bit on a 1998 Fiesta, I must be a total idiot :(

You're offering quite a service there, how much do you charge?

Trust me your prices?

:p

I would spend the repair money on service and tyres etc instead. A bit of scuff isn't going to affect the way the car runs. Might as well save the money on service etc and keep the car running for as long as possible and get some experience before buying another car? If intends on keeping the car forever the yeah, get it repaired if he thinks it worth it.

I don't think the OP has to choose between the two, if I was keeping the car for the foreseeable future I'd get it repaired because I wouldn't want to drive everywhere in a car that looks scruffy.

Thanks for the clarification.

I guess I'll see what they say. I don't mind spending up to around £250 or so getting that fixed, as I hope to have this car for at least another 3-4 years. Would rather not be driving around looking like a tramp. :D I don't realistically see us being able to afford a decent replacement before then.

If it's more than that, I'll just clean it up best I can and see what I can do with consumer products in terms of making it less "striking", so to speak.

Really taking it as an affront to myself -- I know the car was cheap, I intentionally bought a cheap car as I knew something like this was bound to happen. Still, now that it has, I can't stop beating myself up about it. Maybe it's the fact that when the wife was first driving and she did it on her first car (Micra) on one of the driveway posts, it was a less obvious scraping! She wins!

I've been there and done that (only my scrape was much worse and it damaged the rear door panel badly). I HATE driving around in a scruffy looking car so regardless of what it cost to fix I'd get it done. Put it down to experience and learn from it.

I wouldn't be telling people you scrapped it in a car park. Tell them it's a drift wound or something...maybe if it was rwd. Hmmm... okay, tell them you were racing an M5, and you won, but a rabbit jumped out and you had to swerve but luckily avoided it just took a little scrape from the hedge. The M5 couldn't avoid it though and his bumper smashed to pieces and there was rabbit everywhere and then his absolutely gorgeous girlfriend in the passenger seat *******ed him and gave you a wink as you drove off into the sunset.

OK, sorted. This is it. :D ;)

One thing I forgot to mention, I take it it simply IS NOT worth claiming this on my insurance if the cost to fix is >£300 or so?

I was thinking as i read this, "Fiesta Mk6?" and low and behold it was.

Did the exact same thing to my first car. Funny thing was, when i took it to the body shop, there was a load of Mk6 fiestas with the same damage! :p

I reckon a lot of that will T-Cut out. It will make it look better at least!

These things happen. I managed to scrape my previous car (RX8) against the post of my car port whilst reversing in. It polished out fine though luckily. Was pretty gutted initially though. Reckon your damage will mostly polish/tcut out as it doesn't look too bad. But I agree, doesn't matter that it's only a cheap car, i'd want to keep it looking tidy. So ignore the snobby comments :)

Get the tyres done!

I went to far on some rears on my s2 and put it in a field backwards, luckily (very luckily) I did 350£ of damage, so get them done first imo

New door from a breakers - £40
At a guess from estimates I've seen for similar damage - £100 (Maybe less) to properly fill, sand and spray the rest.

Many many moons ago (1978 iirc) I was driving down from the upper floors of a multi story car park in my uber (P.O.S) Hillman Hunter (SPK 721F) when I turned the wheel left...too early and slid down the concrete side of the down ramp.

Doh!

Put a heck of a dent in the nearside sill and I felt such a knob !!

What I've done to similar issues in the past is touch up with manufacturer's paint (brush), and wipe over the top surface so that the paint only builds in the grooves.

That said, first port of call is a wash and polish, then you'll see what is actual damage and what is scratched.
