Is it normal for your waterpump to get hot?

As title says, i bought an EK all in one kit and i just felt the pump and its very hot.

They can get hot.

I know a certain model (can't remember which) can be fitted with some sort of heatsink.

Saying that - my D5 isn't hot.

Neither of my D5s get hot. Probably just pump specific.

This might sound stupid but ... aren't the pumps intrinsically watercooled?

Thanks, the pump itself i dont think is cooled as its a motor

Yeah but the cool water flowing though it will take heat away from the moving parts though right?

To a certain degree yes - but some pumps do get hot.

DDC pumps get hot under operation & you can purchase heat sinks that bolt onto the motor.
D5 pumps run very cool.

Hot or cold it doesn't really make any difference - if the pump is cold it just means it's being more effectively cooled by the water flow through it if anything.

Did a little experiment to check if a pump was working correctly.
Connected a DDC pump to a simple res & run some pipe from the outlet of the pump back to the inlet of the res, approx 1 meter in length.
Run this configuration for a short period of time & the water started to get hot

The pumps do generate heat. It says this in the instructions for the EK all in one kits.

When i was leak testing my loop i ran the pump for 48hrs with no fans on the radiator and my water was about 5 degrees above ambiant temp.

Anything above 40 degrees will feeh hot to touch rather than just warm but the pump shouldnt really get to this temp. Not a modern pump anyway.
