Hi guys,

I posted here a couple months ago to build my girlfriend a Computer for University (CG art)
I got jealous and want to upgrade myself now. I'm working in the CG industry and could with a system specifically for that (I work both in studio and from home on different days of the week, so the system needs to be good for professional use).
I'll also use it for some gaming on the side, so I want it to be able to run anything coming out in the future well.

That said, I'm thinking an Ivybridge 3770k, 16 gb of ram (though I saw that killer 32gb 2600mhz, though Im not sure it's worth going quite that high), and a high end gpu. Unfortunately that's as far as my knowledge of hardware goes these days. I can build the Computer no problem, just need help on what's good and what's not.

One more thing too, I definitaly want to pick up an SSD.

So there we are, budget is around £1000 if possible, though I won't complain if it's a bit less :)

Cheers,
Jon.

Only thing here is, would you UNI work benefit from the hyperthreading of the I7? if not could drop that to I5 3550k and save some moneys. also other people will say get 7950 instead of 660ti. both acceptable cards. 7950 overclocks better.

if you didnt need i7 and dropped to i5 could upgrade gfx card again to a 670 or 7970

If you want fast rendering and to be able to handle high polys you're going to want I7 and as much ram as possible.

Again i dont kno how much ram is necessary for your UNI work but for an extra 36 quid you could get the 2 * 8GB sticks of geil and take it to 16 GB of ram

Dunn why not go for a an XFX, Corsair or the latest Seasonic PSU's?

I was looking for an XFX but all ones around the price of ones i picked were out of stock. didnt check corsair or seasonic tbh.

at work atm just bashing through when i got a spare moment :)

Just checked seasonic, all out of stock up to £105

their is a corsair moduler PSU around this price

Any PSU would do the job to be fair

I'm not at Uni, I work at a studio so I really need all the power I can get. Definitely the i7 for me. I'll steer clear of Radeon too, it plays havoc on Maya. There's some strange compatibility issues there, had problems at work with it too.

Also, as per my previous post - Radeon and Maya don't really go hand in hand :) The build looks perfect other than though, i'd probably go for that TI card. Cheers.

Is this based on a very limited experience or something?

Myself and some good friends can all run Maya on various different radeon cards without any bother.

There's no reason at all to get a 660Ti really, a 7950 is much better and cheaper.

You should go for 8GB sticks of RAM as well, so you can get up to 32GB. I think you'd be better off with more RAM than less very fast RAM, as bandwidth won't be as important as outright RAM quantity for working with renders and imagery.

It's based on every experience i've ever had with radeon and Maya. Weird flickering issues in port view are really frustrating. I've experienced it about Four times now, and it always is attributed to the Radeon card.
Sticking with Geforce because it's what I know and trust.

Which 8gb sticks would you recommend. Pay day this weekend so I'm going to be purchasing this machine.

Still looking at the 3770k & 660ti; just need to decide on RAM and as to whether it's worthwhile to get SSD. I'm not too clued up with hardware though, any help / input is appreciated.
