Budget Gaming Rig - £500

Evening all,

After a new gaming rig, i have around £500 to play with. I could use some of my current rig but most are aroung 5 years old now with exception to the power supply and gpu.

Current Spec

Acer Aspire M5100

AMD Phenom 2.2
500gb HD
550watt power supply
gtx460
DVD/rewriter

any tips welcome

is your DVD-RW and HDD SATA?

Also whats the make and model of the PSU?

Do you need an OS, if yes can you use the free version of Windows 8 until January?

Yeah DVD-RW is SATA and no dont need OS

The only PSU of Coolermasters I know of being decent quality are the Silent Pro Range. Will check that up now though.

Just looked at my DVD-RW and think it is only ATA so i may scrub the SSD for now and get a new DVD-RW.

Will my power supply be up to the job?

No not really. It can deliver up to 500W as it says however it is around 70% efficient at that point and has a very high ripple. Not good for the components.

Also I believe ATA can work in SATA slots? Its just IDE that is the problem.

This looks very tempting, think i may need to add a DVD-RW to the list though as i think mine is only a ATA, i think you may also be right about the power supply too!

so my DVD-RW should be ok then? it is a Optiarc AD-7170S ATA
