NAS or External Drives

Hi guys,

I'm planning on purchasing a Mac Mini some time in the near future (either a new one if they announce it tomorrow or a second hand one) and was wondering what you reckon the best way to store the data is?

I've been contemplating two different methods:

NAS Enclosure with RAID 5 or a bunch of external drives connected to the Mini via a USB HUB.

I'm hoping to run Plex Server on the Mini to provide my media library while on the go (if my upload speed can cope with it); so what do you think would be the best option?

Cheers,

Definately a nas server. So many more features and benefits. Including being able to run plex on the mor epowerful ones.

I run a Synology DS712+ which has a plex server app. That way I dont need to leave my pc on and all my devices have access. Plex app on ios is ok too!

What's your budget?

Not that much! =P.

I've had a read on the Plex forums a lot of people have been moving away from NAS and using Direct Attached Storage; or at least that is what is reads like. The Mac Mini runs on really really low power, so I'm not too worried about leaving it on all day -slightly more concerned about the external drives though.

What are the benefits of going NAS + Mac Mini, rather than simply Mac Mini + Direct Storage?

Thanks,
