Me and my partner have recently bought a new property and I just have a few questions on setting up bills, our completion date is the 28th Sept. It's a 2 bed, mid-terrace.

1. When can we setup Gas/Electric?
When I phoned EDF earlier this month they said that we have to have the keys to the property, but surely we want electric/gas working for when we move in...
2. How should I compare tariffs when I have nothing to compare with?
3. How do I sort out Council Tax?
4. When can I setup water?

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, another question. I've looked up my Council Tax band (B) and that's £1109 a year, so will that be divided by 12 equal payments if I choose to pay that monthly and is there any interest on paying it monthly?

YOu'll need the meter serial number and current readings before you can setup an energy account but that can wait untill your in the property unless they have been cut off?
Council tax is usually over 10 months with no interest, but that depends on the council but has been the case in the last 3 councils i've paid, just let them know when you move in and they will setup your account then :)

Are there people living in it currently? If so, then 1 and 4 don't worry about - it should still be working when you move in.

When you move in take meter readings and get in contact with the current suppliers to let them know the situation. If you want to change, then phone up the new suppliers (this only applies to gas/elec obviously) and they will handle all of the switchover and get in contact with your old supplier.

3. As other have said, I pay mine monthly for 10 months of the year, no interest is paid.

2. Head to http://www.uswitch.com/ and compare tariffs there. I'm pretty sure they have a calculator if you don't have any prior readings so you can guesstimate. My advice would be to sign up with one that looks the cheapest AND doesn't tie you in on a long contract. Then keep an eye on your readings over a few months to see what your actual usage is and switch again if necessary.

1. Once you move in. You'll probably have the pay the old supplier for any energy you use while you wait to be moved to your desired provider and tariff. As soon as you move in, write down meter readings and give these to the supplier. Keep them handy - if you use a month's of energy, just multiply by 12 to give a very rough estimate of what your annual consumption could be.

2. uSwitch, using the meter readings you have taken. I think there is an option to select the size of property and number of occupants.

3. Contact the council.

4. Contact the water board.

Thanks for the advice, I am still in Bridgwater, but as I said it's a new property (New Build) so isn't finished yet for anyone else to be living in, so as far as I know, there is no current supplier unless the building company have set something up for them to 'test' it with.

On a new build the builder will have set up an account with a gas/electricity provider and will then hand over to you as part of the hand over taking a note of the readings at the time of hand over. You then contact that supplier with the serial number and readings to start your account or I guess if you want to change you can immediately instruct them that you want to change supplier before you enter into any contract with them.

The council should contact you and you will be due council tax from the date you move in. It's paid 10 months a year, excluding November and December.
