Some news on Piledriver

There is some rumour going around that Trinity has full Piledriver cores and that Vishera will have Bulldozer cores with modifications! Would be weird if true.

Probably because of the FUD being spread liberally by tools like OBR. There seems to be a major mixup between the latest Bulldozer stepping and Piledriver chips, not helped by fake benchmarks from China.

All I know is that I'm using an Intel CPU two generations old, and that its still not comprehensively beaten by AMD's most current model. How exactly am I meant to get excited for PD?

Don't get me wrong, I love to see them come out with another Athlon, but I really can't see it happening. At least not this generation.

I still think these are mobile chips. The way they've designed them with a clockspeed advantage in mind makes more sense in lower clocked chips, as 200mhz on 2GHz is a 10% boost but at 4GHz is only 5%, yet the increase in dissipated power is the same. This doesn't take into account the increase in voltage, which increases power consumption exponentially when starting from a higher clock speed as well. From the laptop benchmarks the trinity chips are comparing well to the mobile i3s, with better idle power consumption figures and graphics.

I might be tempted to give one a bash if they reach 5ghz comfortably on water and this wasn't just a cherry picked sample, the only thing that would be put me off is having to use Windows 8 for optimum performance, it's horrible to use.

Isn't there any *nix version that suited to the new architecture?

Really don't want /can't afford to spend £450 on a Intel rig (i will only ever buy ROG motherboards from now on) so unless piledriver is at least 15% better than bulldozer I am going to be well ****** off.

I wish AMD would make their mind up..Does anyone know whether steamroller will be on the AM3+ platform or a whole new platform?

That's stupid.

It sure is...but I like Red and Black colour scheme aong side kick ass features.

50% Performance / 50% looks ;)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love ROG boards and I buy them myself.
But I wouldn't compensate on CPU performance because of a ROG board.

I mean, I have a Maximus IV Extreme, but I could live off an MSI GD board very easily.

That Mpower looks incredible too.

But it defeats any logic to get ROG at the cost of performance.

So the FX-8150 had a base clock of 3.6Ghz, an all-core turbo of 3.9Ghz and a max turbo of 4.2Ghz (maximum of 4 cores.)

The FX-8350 (Piledriver) has a base clock of 4Ghz, and a max turbo of 4.2Ghz. So have they removed the all-core turbo stage? It would be pointless for it to be 4.1Ghz.

Also why is the max turbo stage still the same? If they could increase the base clock by ~10% then why not the turbo too?

Still it's nice to see that 400Mhz boost in stock clock for the same TDP on the same process.
