This finally seems to be gaining some momentum in the media. I'm not so upset at BMW for crooks obtaining the tools to reprogram keys, moreso that they can break into the car without setting off the alarm.

A number of owners including myself have looked into fitting a third party alarm like a Viper.

"Therefore, when we were made aware of this new form of attack, we took it very seriously and immediately launched an investigation."

I thought they denied it was even a problem initially?

The dealers and BMW HQ certainly played down the issue when concerned owners contacted them. Same with those owners who had their cars stolen, despite still having both keys.

The chap in the video posted this on PH a few months back.

How gutted would you be seeing that vid of those ***** pushing your motor away. :(

Lol what, you want me to make a statement about an issue with a car I don't even own?

Just... What?

Of course. You seem to be the fountain of bmw related knowledge. So one would expect you to comment.

you dont need to bother with a new security system. Just cut / disconnect your OBD port at the top and re locate it somewhere else. Or insert a switch routed somewhere that can disconnect it

Jobby McJobface.

Ok that stops the scumbag driving off, but it won't alert me when they smash the window and steal my airbag/interior...

*Cringe*

Anyway...

it's good to see that despite BMW's best efforts to play it down and leave owners to pick up the cost of inflated insurance premiums, the internet has made these issues come to light and have shown BMW that they can't just bury their head in the sand and hope it will blow over. Customer care matters.

Doesn't stop them breaking a window to get in before finding that they can't start the car. Would be better if BMW issued a recall and sorted it properly.
