iPhone 5 Detail Today

Watching the stupid release video thing...
Quote, "It's been completely re-designed."
Really? From the outside it looks like they just made it longer and made the back a different soft-textured finish.

Oh, and still no widgets and the so called 'most advanced operation system.'

And still no true multi-tasking.

Genuine question why was the jump from the Galaxy S2 to S3 amazing , yet this is underwhelming when it seems to be pretty much the same increases in both phones??

For me the biggest change from the 4s to the 5 is the screen. And yet it's still lower in resolution then phones released 9 months ago! (Galaxy Nexus)

On the software front it's the same damn thing but they call it io6 instead of io5. I was initially impressed with Apple Maps and the 3Dness of it all. But this is only in promo vids, i want to see it in action and see if i can truly render the building etc faster then Google Earth on my Android. I doubt it but I'll keep an open mind.

You just have to compare the the specs of the S2 and the S3 to see what a massive leap it was. So much so that I'm afraid that the jump from the S3 to the S4 will be much smaller and draw criticism

Yeah, on the face of it, the jumps are quite similar.

Everyone moaned about the Galaxy S 3 though as well (myself included), it's customary to do so. :p You don't really know how good it is until real world testing begins (for battery/camera/etc).

Samsung made a bigger change to the design, and people moaned no end about that (and still do). The iPhone 4 design is the best design (in my opinion), so I wouldn't want it changing much anyway.

Hmm well I'm not interested. Might wait for the Lumia 920 to be released and then if I don't like that go for a pre-owned 4S.

As was mentioned in the BBC tech article, Apple spend less money on R&D than any other company and that shows in how incremental their updates are. Apple have been stuck within their own world view for the last few years and they can afford to be because they have so many loyal users.

Yes but the Iphone 5 now has :

Same size increase in screen size ( 0.5 inches , Same PPI as the S3 )

A much more powerful Processor then the 4S and possibly S3

Improvements made to this camera in both software and hardware

It has a new design , it may not be completely different but it is still different from the 4S cosmetically as well as size , thinness and weight.

Improved battery life over the 4S

New OS and new software / apps

Now has New wifi 5ghz , LTE , new microphones , headphones , connectors

As far as i can tell there are just as many changes if not more then the S2 to S3 jump.

That was a percentage of their overall operating costs, I believe, so not actually representative of anything.

You're quite right, the 4S > 5 jump is just as big as the S2 > S3 jump. Unquestionably.

I think the update is all that Apple really need to do. It's missing NFC and a larger screen. NFC being mostly pointless to anyone for now, and to Apple until they have a service to draw revenue from it. Lack of a larger screen sucks for me, Android manufacturers have shown that people will get used to them and they'll lose some sales to them due to this. But maybe they want a bigger gap if they do launch a smaller iPad. Dunno.

Wikipedia article is now up

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iphone_5

Screen res is 1136x640 so it's still not HD-ready yet. Bit of a set-back when compared to the Sammy S3 being 720p.

It's quite clear that Apple didn't want to make the phone wider, so it's easier to handle for people who have small hands/non-flexible hands (or whatever :p).

720p isn't possible without making it wider, is it? It's an improved, razor sharp screen, so it should serve its purpose fine.

Damn, £529 for the 16GB version. That's waaaaay tooo much these days.

£30 more than it was before, iPhone's have never been cheap. Ever!

edit: actually i'm wrong

HD Ready? Lol, it's a phone.

It has the best pixel density by far and much more clarity and better font reading as a result.

Xperia S has 342 ppi

Is it really a set back though? The whole intention of Retina is that its so sharp you cant see the inidivdual pixels anyway. Would you actually see the difference if it went up to 720p?
