iphone itunes backup recovery win 7

As title, I need to recover data from my itunes iphone backup on my windows 7 PC.

I have found software for mental amounts of money, any freeware stuff or info on where the files are held? (I have found osx freeware stuff but no win 7)

Not when there is possibly a freeware something, or maybe some one knows the file format of the backup data? In win 7 its just 'file' any ideas how to break into it ?

Was the backup encrypted?
