Hey guys, Im moving to central Manchester into the busiest area with the most flats and wifi signals everywhere. Which provider is best here?
Some specifics:
  • At least 10mb speed
  • Minimal torrent and download capping
  • Gives a good router for wifi (one that doesnt lose signal or drop out constantly)
  • Not virgin (dont have fiber optic)
Suggestions please :)

more of the providers have a speed test function on there web pages, that allow you to get a speed estimate based on postcode

try this, and see if you can get Fibre in your area

BeThere were always pretty good seeing as you're not in a Virgin area.

Im with BeThere and they are fantastic :) I cannot fault the service at all, and I can count on one hand the number of times my connection has dropped. I have been with them for about 2 years or so.
The free Thompson wireless router is pretty good too, although you can use your own equipment if you want.
They also have no caps (within reason obviously) and the speed is constant whatever time of day you use it.

Whatever router comes with your ISP will be crap. Get an aftermarket one that supports 802.11n on the 5Ghz range. Also dual band so you can run any older 802.11 devices that don't support 5Ghz on a separate network so they don't slow down the faster devices.

Because the 5Ghz spectrum is less popular and has more channels this will prevent slow down and drop outs. It travels less distance though so if you live in a old building with thick stone/brick walls (like I do) then you'll have to think about the position of the router.

Just go wired. Wireless is a pain in the backside at best.

As for ISP, well if you can't get Virgin get Infi ity and if you can't get that get anything that is LLU (I'd recommend Be Intermet)

your doing it wrong, find out first of all which isps have kit in the exchange then pick the isp. the last thing you want to do is go with an isp that piggy backs of another isp.

depends how much you want to spend really, but I know there are a few MANs in Manchester that can be rented out.

Thanks :)

Also I have been looking around, and it seems like O2 is the only provider that does broadband without you having to also sign up to a monthly landline cost? http://www.o2.co.uk/broadband ("Broadband Only" tab)

You still need to pay line rental.

O2 Home Broadband works using the home phone landline to your house. We'll need to switch over your landline from your existing landline provider or put one in for you, although there may be a charge to do this. If you'd like to use the landline to make calls then choose the Broadband and Home Phone package.
