iPhone 5 insurance or case?

Hey guys,

I have preordered an iPhone 5 from apple. I currently have an iPhone 4 which I have in a case and covered with screen protectors. Which makes it look pretty ugly really and actually makes it more difficult to use.

For my new phone I am contemplating buying accidental insurance as oppose to cases/screen protectors etc. But I wanted to get other peoples opinions first. Is anybody else considering this?

Buying insurance for a year probably wouldn't be much more than my invisibleshield maximum protection and speck case cost from apple.

Thanks :)

Insurance probably wont cover minor cosmetic scratches that your case and screen protectors are.

How much are you currently spending on protectors and cases? I have found the more expensive ones always worth the money, better fitting and as per screen protectors next to not noticeable.

Thanks for the response.

Well for my current phone I think the protectors were like £25 and the case was like £30. But I had to buy a second lot of protectors from zagg.

Are the any you can recommend? At least for the 4/4S as I'm sure wherever they are from will release iPhone 5 ones soon. If not already.

Thanks again :)

I have insurance from natwest advantage gold.

Gives me extended warranty for a year and premium phone insurance with only £25 excess. and a bunch of other crazy benefits like car breakdown cover.

all for £12.95 month

Hi there,

Thanks for your response. What does the insurance cover? Would it cover cosmetic damage or damage that will actually stop it from working?

Although I don't suppose any insurance would cover cosmetic damage.

Have you ever made a claim?

Thanks :)

It covers the following

Covers loss, theft and accidental/malicious damage of handsets up to a maximum retail value of £1000 (including VAT). You're also covered for unauthorised calls up to £1500 (including VAT) per claim for monthly contract phones and £100 (including VAT) per claim for pay-as-you-go.

I don't think any insurance would cover cosmetic damage.

I have made a claim with the select silver account i had for samsung galaxy s2 but excess was £50 and for iphone its £100 excess.

however on gold the excess is lower.

I upgraded because of the extended warranty

I'm looking at the silver account, or Orange Care.

Does anyone have any details about orange care for the iphone?

My best insurance experience has been with o2. When my iPhone 3G screen smashed monday evening, I phoned them and had a new one turn up on Wednesday. Back then the excess was £25 and monthly cost was £7.50.

When I upgraded to the iPhone 4 however, they jacked the price to £15p/m and increased the minimum excess to £50 (which in creases by £25 each time you claim).

I dumped them and now pay 5 quid a month to barclays/LSG.

tl;dr
O2 Insurance:
Good - Fast, reliable cover.
Bad - Expensive.

Orange Care is the best insurance going. They'll replace your phone with a new one next day, even deliver on a Sunday. They do take the p by charging twice as much per month for iPhones and twice the excess though. £6/25 for any other phone.

You might want to check that. Last time I checked my Natwest Advantage Gold mobile insurance T&Cs, they don't provide full cover on iPhones. If you trash it then they don't swap it out for a new one, they send you a cheque to the value of a replacement refurbished phone!

JSInsurance. £59.99 a year and infinitely better looking than any case. I don't see how you all scratch your screens as my phones sit in my pocket with keys and change all the time and never get a hint of damage.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Do you know the excess? Does it cover minor accidental damage?

Does no one else have their phones covered on their home insurance? It's by far the cheapest way.

I'm not sure it is though because isn't there normally a big excess? I'm not certain though.

Thanks again :)

This.

If you think you are likely to break your phone then orange care is the way to go. Few questions asked and they sent you a new one out via courier the next day.

With policy's like Natwest offer or with home insurance, you will find yourself dealing wcommand external making the process as awkward as possible. If you break the screen they will fork up for a replacement but not replace the phone, not sure how this will work on the 5 though. It WILL take a long time to sort it, my brother took almost a month to be able to post them all proof of purchase and for them to sort the claim and whatnot.
