how much do you tip for haircuts?

They're all self employed at the hairdressers I used to go to. They set the price for the cut, and that's what they get.

£9 for 15 mins work hardly qualifies them as paupers, even after you take out the taxes. They're still looking at £30 an hour (assuming they're kept busy all day).

As others have mentioned, this isn't America, and the 'expected' tip for most services is built into the price.

When I'm a millionaire, maybe I'll tip more (but probably not). Until then, the only tip you're likely to get is:

"If you're not happy with your current wage, go find a job that offers a better one, but don't expect me to subsidise you".

I pay £15.50 for my haircut about every 5/6 weeks.

I don't tip because I never thought that that 'was expected' for mens haircuts. Even when I've had to have it cut in central London on the odd occasion when it's costs me £40/50. I still haven't tipped then.

Find it quite strange that you would tip for this service tbh.

£12 - £2 tip. 'tis not much and I reason that as they're are cutting my hair perhaps the 'tip' might persuade them to take a bit more effort next time I'm there.

Thought it was the normal thing to do, but judging by the skinflints in this thread, perhaps tipping is just a local thing. I've only used the same barbers for 20+ years and everyone else there does it. :p

Same here.

Everyone else does, don't want to feel left out :)

I always take either a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates in when I go for my hair doing. Been going to the same place for a few years now.

I use the same senior stylist every time and she makes sure I get a good discount at her friends salon :)

I tip about £2. my hair cut costs £6 here which is bargain when it is better than anywhere else and everywhere else charges around a tenner. Plus the old girls there are a good laugh.

There's nothing 'skinflint' about it. It's a haircut. We all have to get one regularly (with the exception of the folically challenged among you ;)), and they're not exactly cheap these days.

I certainly don't apologise for keeping the change that's due me. As I said, if they want to charge more, add it to the advertised price.

As mentioned in my first post on the subject, it doesn't affect me anymore. I got fed up of the price continually going up so I bought a pair of clippers and now do my own. It's not as pretty or tidy as the guy that used to cut my hair, but as it doesn't cost me anything, I'm not complaining about it.
