Living in Bristol... Bristolians advise!

So, might be upping out of London to Bristol for a job... my question is where do I live.

I have a car, and ideally want a garage to keep it in for insurance purposes... Willing to drive a couple of miles into the city each day, but not sure on the parking regulations within the city.

I'm a professional, single, no animals and will be working in the main city (BS1 postcode).

I will be renting, 1 room would suffice and would very much not to live in a dump :D.

So far to set a benchmark - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-36901442.html

Costs, up to £1200 per month.

Very much looking for advice on the best areas to live. By this I mean low crime, reasonably quiet but close to the city/towns for anything I need.

So far I've specced:

- Stoke Bishop (I hear it's quite affluent here?)
- Abbots Leigh (Looks quiet with nice roads)

If you've got £1200 I'd say Clifton but you won't get a driveway for that (very unlikely)

Bedminster?

Abbots Leigh is nice too as mentioned. You'll either need to drive the long way into town though to avoid the 50p each way bridge charge, or pay up (can buy card which cuts down cost)

Henleaze is nice but bit further out, as is Long Ashton

Clifton is probably the nicest area. You'll enjoy Bristol. It's like London but a lot more... laidback.

The only thing I'm worried about... I'm quite stern / serious and don't tolerate fools easily.

Fortunately the company is a quirky one in true Bristol fashion - Perhaps they can alter me :p

You mean the thread with idiots posting bad locations right? Just the advice you should be giving . .

dont know i didnt read the thread, i just remembered someone asked the same question recently and thought it might help you, if people gave him bad advise dont blame me

I see it now :)

Spooky I used to live the other side of that church! :D

Lovely area, corner shop down the road, good access to town and the local shops, ooh and the Lido not far away at all

Brilliant man, always good to hear a first hand account.

I suppose the best thing about doing LONDON > BRISTOL is everything seems like a bargain. I do fear making the switch back though, quite spend heavy and going from Bristol prices to London again would be a huge change.

Also, amusing accents.

I wouldn't put the Bristolian accent far below the London-Estuary accent in terms of (comic) annoyance, tbh.

And you should lighten up! Living alone in a city can be a blast. Bristol has a great party-scene, and lots to do for people from all walks of life. It's very vibrant and eclectic. London is a bit depressing, in comparison.

Clifton, Redland, Long Ashton and Westbury-on-Trym are all the nicer areas, though Clifton isn't great for parking and you'll have trouble finding anywhere with a garage. You basically want North/North-West of the centre. South is more bohemian and up and coming with a lot of residential terraced streets. East can be pretty rough with lots of 20th C builds and far North there's lots of new build estates.

Why do you want to drive into work every day? Bristol is pretty compact so the bus, cycling and walking will all be viable options, and like you say depending on your exact office parking may be an issue or expensive.

Where would you guys recommend OUT of the city, say a few miles drive in?

Are Abbots Leigh and Stoke Bishop a good shout? The greenery in Abbots Leigh appeals to me... Even though I'm beginning to sound like a 40 year old man.

Drive a Z and enjoy it - I'd be working around Queens Square

Ta dah - http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/carpark/queen_square/bs1/bristol/ - Fairly expensive to park but much better than London...

Yep, I work around the corner from there and have two friends that work in offices in the actual square. The square is very limited as you can imagine but there's two largeish car parks nearby, Trenchard Street being the biggest.

Trenchard (#19 on the below link) does £2074.00/year parking and the other biggest NCP (#8) doesn't list their yearly rates. Depends on your budget/car allowance/preferences really. Parkopedia is useful: http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/queen_square_bristol/

This is a lie.

So... you saw the single male part right? :p

Cheers for all the help so far guys, I shall continue exploring. Taking a drive to Bristol in a few weeks to scope it out, so I'll get to see the city first hand
