Today my second one of these arrived:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-052-HS

After installing it I checked CCC to see if everything was fine, which it seemed to be. Both cards register and look normal. I also put the clock speeds back to default on the first card to be safe (so they are both at stock speeds). I have 12.8 drivers installed.

I tried out The Witcher 2 to see just how much of an improvement the new card would be. Less than a minute in, my system hung for a few seconds. But all seemed fine thereafter. 15 minutes later, however, the game froze, shortly followed by a black screen requiring a manual reset.

After this I decided to use Unigine's Heaven Bench for testing as it's faster to load. Sometimes it would freeze and others it would freeze and then change to a black screen - both cases requiring a manual reset.

If I disable crossfire in CCC I have no problems at all.

The rest of my spec:
i5 2500k @4.5
4GB 1600Mhz
Asus P8P67
Antec TruePower 750W

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Fledge

I suggest you try the new card on its own to make sure it isn't faulty.

Make sure all the power connectors are secure (both ends as it's a modular PSU).

Thanks for the suggestions, I've tried all of those things but no toffee.

When I try to play The Witcher 2 (I think it's the best choice for this as it's extremely demanding) now and then it will freeze and I will need to tab out quickly before my system freezes entirely. When I see my desktop I get the notorious 'AMD driver has stopped responding as has recovered.'
The only time I've seen that before is when I was having issues with my 5870 - and that was fixed with a BIOS update.
So I think this only happens when they're under a lot of strain. Could this mean they need more voltage? I don't see why they would be factory clocked to a setting with inadequate voltage though.

try underclocking each gpu's memory by 100-150 mhz, usually when it freezes in certain games like that it points to gpu memory crashing

I tried wazza's idea but it didn't help at all, if anything, the drivers stopped responding more frequently.
I'm starting to think this is just a software issue that I'll have to wait for a fix for from AMD.

Drop your drivers to 12.3 or 12.4 or if you haven't already done it.
Down load MSI after burner go in options/advanced an tick (i think) "force voltage".

Also, I just tried playing Guild Wars 2. It's using recommended settings for my hardware, but only achieving a measly 8 fps. It's like the second card isn't being used or something.

Have you tried the second (new) card by itself?

It looks like it.

Did you reinstall the drivers when you put the new card in?

Have you tried the new card on its own? would help to narrow down the problem

Are there known issues with 12.8 that 12.3/4 don't have?

Loads of people here have had problems with 12.8, i had problems with it with my 5770 crossfire.
I also had problems with it with my 7850 at first.
But i would try what Surveyor has pointed out first just to make sure its not the new card.

I have tried the new card alone and it works fine.
I also have the newest CAPs.
If I disable crossfire and play GW2 on the auto-detect settings, I get around 35-45 fps. However if I then enable crossfire I only get 8-11 fps.
