FAO Fox: Buying a E39 530i Sport

An official menu price Value Oil Service is £189 (The Value range was awesome when launched but seems to get jacked in price every year to the point where its almost become pointless). You can get it done for £100ish by suppling your own oil and missing out microfilters, but officially at least its £189 not £99.

I think I paid £58 for a coolant change.

Ah right, is £58 the official price at BMW, or did you have to shop around for that price?

I'm not sure it is, I've been going to the dealer for years though so perhaps they just did me a good price.

Google tells me you got a very good price. Also, in regards to the rear brake pads/discs - should I try asking for a discount and paying to fix them myself?

I wouldn't worry excessively about coolant change evidence in the book. What does it look like? Besides, at the age/mileage of car you'll be picking up you will be wise to consider a full cooling system overhaul (rad, thermostat, water pump, hoses) anyway, during which you can change the coolant.

The car does look good, there's slightly more wear on the seats than you see in the pictures, but I imagine that's to be expected. BTW, do you know roughly how much a full overhaul of the cooling system would cost (along with the coolant)?

How urgent do they need doing? I did amazingly well with mine. I found a deal at Rybrook BMW for the rears - £120 (Yes, £120) to to supply and fit the rear discs and pads. Sensational value. The price went sharply up after I'd had it done :D Then for the fronts I found that Stratstone in Hull were selling off a load of E39 530i front discs at just £39.99 a pair. So I had those, and then paid £70ish for the pads (pads costing almost twice as much as discs, never thought I'd see that!) and then an indy £50 to fit.

Total cost of genuine discs and pads, fitted, front and back = £280.

Yeah, it's just the pads that need doing. All the guy said was that on the last drive out with the car it "came up" telling them the pads needed replacing.

£500 for parts?

Radiator, thermostat, waterpump, top and bottom hose and potentially a header tank. Not seeing £500 there.

I'll give BMW in Oxford a ring tomorrow to see how much they'd want for a coolant change, oil change and the cooling system overhaul - oh and rear brake pads as well.

What bulbs do you guys use in your rear Hella Celis clusters?

My car keeps moaning about a brake light failure but then it clears the error within a few miles/brake uses. It's the drivers side which is playing up.

I've noted there is grease in the multi-pin light connector, do you think I should clean this all out (brake parts cleaner)?

The passenger side never seems to have issue.

Use proper electrical cleaner.
