So I am looking at buying an M3 and I wanted some advice about how much I can negotiate with BMW dealerships with regards my purchase.

I am looking for a 12-18 month old E92 M3 with the following options:

19's
DCT - auto
EDC - electronic damper control
Parking sensors - front and rear
BMW Media professional
Electric Folding Mirrors
Heated front seats
Memory seats
Harmon / Kardan speakers - would be a bonus!

So the cars range from £37k for a 2011 (March) plate to £46k for a 2012 (March).

The guy I have been speaking to at Sytner Solihull reckons a £1000 discount would be the most I could get (although this was not discussed with a PCP plan in place - with me paying it off within a week of getting the car). Does that sounds reasonable - £1000 off a ~£40k car? What should I be negotiating into any deal I do?

Also is it worth £2-3k extra for essentially a 6 month newer car, although the mileage on most of them is <5000 miles?

How much discount you will get on a car would depend on how keenly the car was originally priced, popularity of colour/spec, the time of the month & how desperate the salesman is, whether it was a part exchanged at a low price or bought from a trader, etc. So it is variable. When looking for mine, some dealers were offering thousands off lower spec, less desireable coloured cars whilst for the full specced, popular coloured ones I was lucky to get a few hundred off.

Also I noticed a lot of the new-ish low mileage M3s I saw were ex-demo cars.

Yeah they all seem to say they are straight from BMW?? Should I stay well clear of them? I mean doing 2500 miles in 18 months is a little worrying in itself.

I got 10% off mine from Sytner as well as an extra years warranty.

Though frankly you are nuts spending that much on an E92 - it's an end of life car, there is simply no need to spend that sort of money. An AUC 58 plate would be a far better bet, it is pretty much exactly the same car.

Or even this at £15,000 less than the ones you are looking at

You can get an 09 or 59 plate for a lot less (<35k I reckon) that should have the CIC iDrive unit fitted to it. To be honest, that, plus DCT, EDC, 6FL/USB port and heated seats is all you really need. However the HK/Individual audio is much better than standard.

When is the new M3 due ?

Even then I will not be able to afford a new one and will probably have to wait 1-2 years before I can purchase a F30.

Hence why I am thinking a newish E92 will be adequate to tide me over till 2016 by which time, who knows, I might be looking for something completely different.

As for the pre-facelift E92 M3s, yes they are cheaper, but obviously have higher mileage and only 1 year warranty. The newish ones will have 18 months and very few miles. If I keep it for 4 years or so the overall costs associated with an older higher mileage car, in my mind at least, may cancel out the initial savings.

But the saving is in excess of FIFTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS? For fundamentally the same car. You can simply renew the warranty and you'll be covered for absolutely everything bar trivial items like bits of trim and seals. The BMW warranty is so good that provided you simply renew it there is no reason why you'd need to spend anything more than routine servicing, tyres, insurance, tax and fuel on any of the cars linked to in this thread.

The E90 came out 7 years ago. It's a nice car but it's showing its age inside and out, is that really what you want to sink almost £40k into? Just seems madness. The 2011 ones will suffer from absolutely savage depreciation over the next few years.

Seems bonkers especially when you can experience the same car for so much less money. It's not as if I'm suggesting you buy an old E46 and fix it yourself whenever it goes wrong.

I personally wouldn't buy an ex-demo since they probably aren't going to have been very well looked after.

Most the 10 plates onwards have LCI facelift and get a slightly better MPG. The mid 09's onwards have an updated i-drive interface which is much nicer than the old one that looks pretty dated now.

As said though since the cars depreciate fast, it depends on how much of an issue money is, as to whether it is worth going for a newer one or not.

Also, as its an M3 thread its worth mentioning, you can get a personal lease on a brand new M3 now for under £500 a month with a tiny deposit.

Two points:

The LCI on the M3 consisted of almost nothing of note - as with the E46 it never got the full LCI, only different rear lights. Inside the LCI changes in the Coupe were negative not positive - cheaper feeling sunvisors and the relocation of some of the switch gear to the climate panel.

Usually LCI is a must have. This is not the case with the E92. The only big upgrade thats worth having is CIC iDrive - which is present on cars built after September 08 (Not mid 09). You don't need LCI for that.

So I can keep renewing the BMW warranty on a 2009 BMW M3?

Yes. And if you chose a monthly warranty, the price will not increase even as you go over mileage thresholds.

Get it on a monthly policy before 60k miles and you keep the lower rate until you chose to cancel. No age limits.

That does sound like a very good idea Fox, thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Do BMW quote on their website how much I will be paying (monthly/yearly) to extend a warranty on a 2009/10 M3 then?

They do but you need to find the registration number of an M3 that isn't in warranty already to do it. So find a sub 60k mile 2007 one. The price is the same irrespective of the age of the car. It's also cheaper to renew than it is to take it out fresh so the quote will be worst case scenario.

I sorted one for my parents now 10 year old 530i. Only last week it had a new headlight under warranty. No hassle. No quibble. Just done. Just like a new car. It's staggeringly good in my opinion :)
