Half Life 3 rumours suggest RPG elements

September 21st, 2012 at 12:52 pm -
In what could be the most surprising and hard to believe rumour to come out of the Half Life 3 speculation mill, French publication Jornaldugamer is suggesting that the next game to feature Gordon Freeman, could be an open world, quest and NPC filled RPG.
Speaking with a “her” that the site claims was “close to Valve”, the site said that HL3 will still be an FPS, but it will take place over a large, sandbox map inspired by the likes of Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Apparently it’s gone through several stages of development, from a traditional linear FPS like we’re used to seeing from Valve, into a puzzle and exploration title, to the current iteration which involves getting quests from NPCs.

Open world? RPG elements? Not likely.
Other details include the vague release date of “after 2013,” and that this will indeed be a full sequel to Half Life 2, not a continuation of the episodic series that appeared in 2006 and 2007.

What a load of Rubbish. I'll wait until I hear something that from a reliable source - i.e. Valve.

For the record, no I would not want it to be that type of game - I don't see why everything "should be" just because it's iin fashion at the moment. I also do not think Valve would do that

We hate hl3 related rumors, we've grown tired and angry of them over the several years of waiting and over thousand of "pointless" rumor threads as all rumors have been bogus. Hence negative replies.

As for you question, I personally would like half life to stay what it has been, but introduce new mind-blowing gampelay, as it did with half life 2.

I do not like quests in FPS and I do not like open world in fps either, so hopefully this rumor is not true.

However looking at games market, people prefer open world and want choices (thus quests), so it is perhaps likely that valve is adjusting to such demand, but I hate it personally, especially for a half life game.

I know I'll probably get crucified, but I actually wouldn't mind if HL3 was a "lite" RPG - kind of like Deus Ex. HL has always had a great story and required a little more thought than most shooters.....so maybe some RPG elements are the way forward.

Whatever form it comes out in, I trust Valve to do an awesome job of HL3. And take forever doing so.

However, I simply can't buy that HL will evolve into an "open-world" type game. And quests from NPCs? How will that work with Gordon Freeman's trademark silence? Will he communicate with stares and eyebrow movements? Or perhaps sign language?

I can imagine the 'speech' options when you communicate with an NPC:

* Stare aggressively
* Walk away and shake head
* Hit with crowbar
* Nod solemnly to accept the quest
