Old people driving slowly - rage is building

Not according to the copper that was leading the course my boss had to go on to avoid getting points on his licence. It was news to me too :)

Because the cop is not going to tell people put on a course after being caught speeding that there is a certain leeway available to them... He is trying to get them to curb their speeding, not give them advice on how to get away with it....

Cops CAN charge you for doing 1MPH over the limit but they probably won't. If they did, the CPS/PF would drop it before it even went to court and, if not, the judge/sheriff would throw it out for being bloody ridiculous.

There has to be a margin of error as the devices, although calibrated often by the police, still have a margin of error. It is never going to be a safe conviction if you went 1MPH over the limit. Can you honestly say that it can be proven beyond all reasonable doubt that you were doing 31MPH and not 30MPH?

Without going into whether it's right or not to run on the road, or who has right of way etc... Does a main road really seem like a wise place for running? Are there no parks or anything, that don't frequently have vehicles capable of killing you flashing past? I don't mean to be offensive, I just think it seems so dangerous, there's no way I'd do it. Mind you, I probably wouldn't ride a motorbike for similar reasons, far too many idiots on the road. I'll keep my big metal cage around me!

I appreciate what you are saying. I live in the country so it is not hugely busy roads at all plus I lie running on the quiet back roads round here, great scenery and a lot less boring than running around a park/track.

If you're driving dangerously then the problem is you not the OAPs.

I get this on the motorway to work every day, when it's 2 lanes it causes lorries to overtake and traffic to pile up behind them. Tbh they need to keep up with the flow of traffic.

Older drivers cause more accidents than younger drivers, younger drivers just so happen to be directly involved with more of the accidents they cause. I've lost track of how many older drivers I've seen blindly pull out regardless of what is coming with no indication, I've also lost track of how many people take huge risks to get past people doing half the speed limit, which isn't the aggressors fault in any way. Majority rule = dominant one. If 30 people want to drive at 60 but one person is dregling along holding everyone at 40, the rights of the 30 outweigh the one, and the one should either speed up, pull over, or get off the roads.

Manditory tests should be taken every 3 years regardless of age, the hospital I work at requires employees, from surgeons to cleaners, to take several refresher courses a year to do with health and safety and proper behaviour around the public. Where are you safer, walking down a hospital corridor or driving on a main road? It baffles me the government don't enforce this already, it would greatly cut the amount of dangers that exist on the roads in half due to children who winged their test with the intentions of doing the opposite of what they showed the instructor and slow, timid drivers would be taken off the roads in equal measure.

Just burn them. Clear stretch of road where it's safe to overtake then off you go. It's frustrating when you are stuck with no chance of overtaking though :(

The police speed guns are considered accurate, whether your speedo is or not, so while I agree it's unlikely you'd get done for 1mph over the limit, it is possible.

Did a quick google around as well just to see and found the following two bits of info:

10 motoring rules that you might have broken today

10) Mini-speeding
There’s no such thing as a 10% leeway for speeding. Doing 33mph in a 30 zone is just as illegal is doing 45mph.

And then there's UK Speeding

6. Do the police allow a 10% leeway?

YES and NO! Technically you are not allowed to go 1mph above the speed limit and if you do it is an offence. However, some police forces will choose not to prosecute if it is only a few mph above the limit. Speed cameras may be set for higher speeds that the limit and this may be 10%, but do not rely on this.

As of 2011 the Association of Police Officers (ACPO) have agreed guidelines that in a 70mph area you will be able to do up to 86mph without getting points and instead you will have to do a speed awareness course.

The guideline is the equivalent of 10% +9mph. So in a 30mph zone the maximum to avoid points would be 42mph. 37 out of 45 forces have agreed to adopt these guidelines.

So it seems it's pretty much down to the individual force how rigidly they enforce the limits.
