Why can't pc games be traded in ?

Not anything physical. The 2nd hand and the new one are identical in every way. There's zero incentive to buy new.

But they wouldn't need to sell it back on pre owned. It's a digital download so they can sell back on at full price but allow you to trade it back to them for discounts on other games

I suppose I'll go an preown my cable subscription then.

Subscription, not a single license.
Steam have a "subscription" service, but the model isn't a subscription based (Sure, you could say, you're subscribing to a game when you buy it for 999 years, but that's calling a shoe a fish)

You wouldn't need to sell it back, you would sell it direct to other gamers, completely cutting the developer out.

Not at all, a cable subscription is still a singular licence to use a package of programmes. The games you buy on Steam are no different, you buy a subscription to use a bunch of files in a folder for a much, much longer time. It's still a subscription, law and logic have always used facts and technicalities since forever, so this is no time to apply common sense.

It is also morally bankrupt and downright fraudulent to consider a bunch of cloned files that you'll delete from existence as some kind of possession to sell to somebody else, when they receive totally fresh and brand new copies of the product, and can procure as many copies of it they want via infinite reinstalls.

This is just people wanting some entitlement despite not actually selling any goods, it's no different to cancelling a cable subscription early and expecting to be able to sell on the right to have a cable subscription to somebody else.

I swear a new thread about this is made everyday...

Well I completely disagree with your opinion.
Cable is a proper subscription service, Steam isn't. It's a store telling you that you're subscribing to the game.

EDIT : I don't even agree with being able to resell digital stuff I don't want a second hand market for digital content.

Well fair play to you, you're well in your rights to have your opinion. What's baffling though is how Steam isn't a subscription service? Granted they are fairy tale rental periods, but the fact still remains, go forward 1,000 years and look in your Steam library mate, it'll be empty. Thus subscription expired. ;)

The Law isn't there to circumvent genuine business practices, or at least not until now. I am well chuffed with the offers and services I receive already, the daily/weekly/summer sales Steam have alone are tremendous, wanting the right to then sell your £3.75 video game for 90% of what you paid for it is greedily insane anyway. You already get products that cost 10's, sometimes 100's or even 1000+ million pounds for less than a pint, next you'll be wanting to sell your urine to the pub for some cashback.

Steam doesn't have a defined period, you might be able to log in 1000 years in the future and for it to still be there.

Steam is a store calling itself a subscription service (Not that I care)
If Steam called itself what it actually is, and still didn't let me sell my games, I wouldn't care.

Well until I see evidence of there not being any information of the time period you can access your game from the day you purchase them, that's debatable.

:)

Creepysmilebombed.

Does your software degrade?

Yes you are, you could sell the license (Not physical product however)
But you're not able to.

That doesnt matter. but it does get older.

I can buy a piece of gold, that doesnt degrade either and im allowed to sell that on later.

There are loads of things that dont degrade that you can buy and sell...

I couldn't care less about not being able to sell my Steam games as I bought them for peanuts (Only buy in sales).

I think there should be an option to give games away to your friends for free, as I have a few games that I don't get on with and I don't like them cluttering up my library.

If you want to put your case to the gov. on digital services, head over to the bis website and respond to their consultation.

'the digital content must match any trial version or demo'

That is pathetic, it should be:

'the digital content must provide any trial version or demo'

That doesnt matter. but it does get older.

That are physical. How can you even compare a piece of gold, that's value is 100% invested in its single self to a product that is cloned and distributed to potentially millions of people.

The gold has the potential to be damaged etc.
The software will be as perfect as the day it was first purchased.
