Hi there,

I'm looking for a 15" laptop suitable for relatively high end gaming but also functional for portable work (college) use etc. Price £900-£1100. I came across these two laptops with the following specs:

Lenovo Y580: £1000
I7-3612QM
GTX 660m
1080p display
1tb 5200rpm & 64gb SSD
HDMI/USB 3 etc. ports
dvdrw drive
2.8kg

MSI GE60 OND: £1050
I7-3610QM
GTX 660m
1080p display anti-glare
750gb 7200rpm
HDMI/USB 3 etc. ports
blu ray drive
2.4kg

The MSI is a little smaller and lighter and has a less reflective screen (apparently) plus a 7200rpm HDD but the Lenovo apparently has better build quality, and is probably better suited to work use (its main purpose) at the very least in aesthetics.

Any thoughts on which of these is best? Or any similarly specced laptops that compete?

Many thanks

Those two are very similar to be honest, main difference is the design. The Lenovo wins on specs though with a larger HDD, and the SSD to back it up. If you want something a little smaller you can look at the Sony S15 range, they have a weaker GPU in the 640M, it's the same chip however it's clocked lower and uses GDDR3 memory instead of the GDDR5 on the two you've linked. There's also the Samsung 15 Chronos models, they're smaller than the two you've linked. They have the 640M again, but it's the GDDR5 version instead of the GDDR3, which means it's the same chip as the 660M (in performance) but clocked lower. You can overclock it easily enough though if you want (obviously you can OC the 660M as well...).

Also you'll need to remove the links to competitors from your post.

Thanks for the advice. I am leaning towards the Lenovo, the only thing that points me towards the MSI is the slightly better portability (weight/size).

I'm definitely inclined though towards the GTX660m due to its performance compared to the lower clocked models which is why I didn't post the Samsung models (that do look pretty good).

A mate has the MSI one. The build quality is fine, and the screen is also nice in that it barely reflects anything. Doesn't have a UK keyboard layout though, not sure if that's an option and if not, unsure if that's an issue for you.

Can't seem to find this available in the UK?

It's available on several websites but I can't list them as they are classed as competitors to OcUK. They do a couple of P150EM's on here but they don't offer a matt screen which is what swayed me as I've always had matt screen's due to using business laptops.

Feel free to email me at aranjeet(at)hotmail(dot)com for advice regarding spec and performance etc

The GE60-OND-083UK frustratingly has literally just diminished in stock as they are releasing a new model just with a i7-3630QM instead of the 3610 in a few weeks. I'm struggling to find a similar laptop with 15" matte screen, GTX660 (or above) and under 2.5kg in weight and am debating whether or not to wait for the new model.

If there was a laptop with these specs though I'd eat it up as I need one asap. The P150m is much too heavy...

Any ideas?

What's wrong with the Lenovo from the first post? I'd choose that over the MSI anyway due to the better specs.

Well the MSI is smaller, thinner, about 500g lighter, has a matte screen, 7200rpm hdd (as opposed to 5200 on the lenovo) and in a couple weeks will have a better processor as well (3630 vs 3610). I've also read that the MSI has much better cooling and can handle games for much longer than the Lenovo. I also love the MSI aesthetically to be honest. I've also heard Lenovo customer service is poor.

But frankly if the new MSI-OND-UK model release date is more than a week or two I'll just get the Lenovo as I need a laptop asap. I am looking at a few ASUS laptops though that are similar to the MSI but weight-wise the MSI seems unbeatable.

There's very little difference between them in size to be honest, a few mm each way really. I've not read any reviews that have said the cooling on the lenovo is bad. Also the 5400RPM HDD on the Lenovo is irrelevant really, as with the 64GB SSD it will dominate the MSI in storage performance, and then has a larger HDD for actual storage.

I agree the differences are minor. But to be honest I'm happy to wait a week or two for a little less weight, matte screen and nicer looks (imo). I'm finding out an exact release date and if its any more than a couple weeks I'll just jump on the Lenovo.

HOWEVER- I found another contender - Gigabyte P2542G
(same specs as the aforementioned) with matte screen, 2.6kg weight. Only downside is the odd yellow colour and the £1300 price tag... Only available at amzn :S

Pulled the trigger on the Gigabyte. 128gb SSD puts it ahead of the other two in terms of performance. I can just about live with the yellow colour, I think.

If the new MSI GE60 I7-3630QM was out I would have probably gotten that though, just in-case anyone is in the same position.

i played on one them at a show, most just commented on the color yep^^
was nice specs tho, 660 and ssd
much better than my laptop ><

i like the yellow!

Since you're open to suggestions how about this:

Medion Erazer X6821 15.6" £1149
i7-3610QM
GTX 670M
1080p matte screen
2 x 750 GB HDD
16 GB memory
Blu-ray drive

From what I can make out they're bare-bones systems from MSI that Medion add there own components too. You get a better graphics card AND the bluray... although the Lenovo has a slightly better CPU.

£50 over your budget, but its really good value imo. I've just ordered the similar 17" model for work and a bit of gaming.

3612QM performs worse than the 3610QM doesn't it? It's a lower power option for laptops that can only handle 35W CPU's rather than the standard 45W of the quad cores.

I wouldn't worry about the minor differences between the 3610QM, 3612QM and the 3630QM though as the GPU will limit your gaming long before the CPU does, especially with the 660M.

For under £1100 it's an absolute no-brainer to get this in terms of gaming performance:

Sure it's a bit on the heavy side but that GPU absolutely decimates the 6600M!

The 675M being compared in the review here is significantly faster than the 660M and that still takes a huge beating from the 7970M: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5778/amd-launches-radeon-7700m-7800m-and-7900m-mobile-gpus
