I have a 3 year old Ryobi OHV 180 petrol mower.

Last year I had to spend £40 to repair it after the first cut of the year.

This year it lasted 2 cuts before I had to spend £75 on various engine related repairs. It has lasted 2 further cuts and the engine is now spuing fuel out everywhere - The primer has broken and is sucking the fuel straight through.

Getting a bit fed up with it and looking to replace it as this will probably be cheaper in the long run and hoping I will be able to pick something up at a much reduced cost with it being end of season.

So, who has a petrol mower that has lasted a long time without having to spend a load of money on repairs, and also is relatiavely easy to service and what brand / model? Looking for something with a similar size enginge to the OHV 180 and would like it to have motorised wheels.

/pre-empts the posts with massive sit on mowers and lol's in advance.

I have a Briggs & Stratton petrol mower that is as old as the hills, I keep it up my allotment these days & it still starts 1st pull & will chop through just about anything. All the metal is rotting away so I have to block holes up with tiles & rocks but the mower/engine/blade just keep rocking on.
If I was you I'd look for a 2nd hand B&S as they just done make them like they used to.

Same as mine, holes appearing have to wear riggers and keep the kids away when mowing but three pumps of the primer and first pull it starts, haven't done anything more than sharpen the blade in 5 years, it was second hand when I bought it from a mower repair place.

People have bought the £99 B&S ones from Homebase but the plastics give out in a year.

If you really want something quality then either a John Deere or Honda.
Personally I prefer the John deere but either is excellent.

Suffolk Colt, wow that's going back some years since I've seen / used one of them. Now, to see if I can lay my eyes on a pic of the sprinklers we had. :)

I know it's a little off-topic for the opening post, but have you thought about getting a gardener in to replace the mower? They are pretty cheap per hour and unless you have a really large, neat garden it works out at a quite competitive rate. Basically, we pay about £15 per month during the nicer months for ours to be kept tidy. That's for a fairly large back garden and he's a 'proper' gardener.

I've got an old Briggs & Stratton too. It was my dads old one that hes had for donkeys years! The engine is totally bullet proof. The only things I've had to do to it was clean the carb and replace the spark plug but its still going strong now!

Hayter - I think they use Briggs and Stratton engines or something. Used to use my Grandad's one years back, when I next buy a mower it will be one of them :)

Rotary - My budget is not going to stretch to a JD! Im thinking mid-range. Thanks for suggestions so far.

Dont want to employ a gardender. I prefer to do it myself.

Decent MTD mowers are a good buy too. I abused the living daylights out of mine (bricks, earth, pipework, 6 feet tall brambles and weeds) for ten years and it kept on trucking. We changed the oil maybe twice, the air filter once... that was it. Never bought a new blade either :D

Wasn't much left of it in the end - still ran, mind! Was expensive though, £550 when new.
