Got our 100meg installation done today. Im getting 100mb/s + via ethernet cable. But in the same room if i connect via wireless getting mid 30s? thats about 10 feet away from the router.

Two floors up im barely getting 1meg!! wirelessly and am only getting 1 bar reception.

Thinking of running 3 ethernet cables around the house with a switches on each end. so 3 cables with 3 x 4 gigabit port switches on each end. will that work?

That's good for wireless, you don't state what type of devices are connecting but either way that is good for wifi.

What do you expect after being two floors up?

Depends what device your connecting, personally I use homeplugs which have a Wireless-N and 3xEthernet connections perfect for everything that way and less devices to plug in.

Do you get the full 100meg via homeplugs?

Which model are you using?

Top Floor

2 x PC's
PS3
TV DLNA
Also need 1 wireless for connecting laptops/or spare/test pcs

Mid Floor

1 x PC - possibly another if my dad starts using his again

2nd Floor (router installed here)

1 x DigiBox
2 x TV
1 x PC

1st floor (basement)

Just wireless devices / phones etc

Shouldnt i be getting full 100meg via wirelessly as well? especially when so close to it?

No my Homeplus (Belkin 1GB) get 40Mbps.

Then whats the point of having a 100meg connection?, are switches suitable in my sitaution and do they also lose speed?

I could have one 6 way switch on the mid floor with wireless built in, and from it can run cables to what ever needs to be wired in plus will improve wireless for the top floor.

if I'm correct i dont think any Powerline solution gives full speed? Maybe someone else knows.

Good thread to read: http://www.avforums.com/forums/networking-nas/1673120-homeplug-question-85mpbps.html

Also:
The Devolo dLAN 500 AVmini starter kit is one the best powerline networking solutions we've so far seen. For starters, it supports incredible connection speeds of up to 500Mbps, and while there are few (if any) households in the UK that can boast such broadband speeds, all will enjoy significant improvements when compared to a Wi-Fi connection. On our test home broadband connection (which averages out at around the 19Mbps mark when connected directly to our router) we never saw speeds drop below 18Mbps with the Devolo kit, an improvement of as much as 25% over the speed of our best Wi-Fi connection

Not even connected to Steam or anything, no downloads going on. I'm starting to get sick of this, I've been downloading at about 700kb/s constantly when I'm on 60(8)mb/s D and 3mb/s U. I phoned them up about 3 weeks ago and they sorted it out for about 3 days, got back to top speeds, then it slowly went down hill again. So I'm gonna have to ring up every 3 days just to get what I'm promised.

Somebody remind me again why I'm on VM?

Another test shows

after a second reboot of the modem, a little better. Steam however is:

It's basically turned Steam into one giant game of Tetris.

I've always been very happy with VMedia and whilst my phone and Tv services have swapped around constantly I have been with their internet service since i first use their dial-up back some 15 years ago.

IF, and it's a BIG if, it goes down it's normally resolved the following day and if I get some speed issues (once every 2/3 months) then it's resolved by resetting the modem (turning it off and on).

Some are asking why go for the 50meg, well I'd like it, but i guess it isn't imperative.

I tend to play EvE (internet spaceships) a lot and if I am on that or on my PS3 connected, then my wife can't use her camera on Skype and in reality, the same applies to anytime I'm online..... it practically closes everything else down.

I'm sure someone will tell me that it's nothig to do with my speed though :)

ps.... I have some issues that I've posted in this forum on, if anyone would be so kind to have a look??? :)

If you want useable Skype, streaming etc while gaming then set up QoS on your network. As you say these issues can often have little to do with your line speed.

Not heard of QoS before. What does it do?

QoS is settings in the superhub that you can prioritise certain applications over the other. It's really easy to go in and look at and know how to set it up without learning first actually so give it a go with Eve online.

So.... what, it limits speeds to ensure everthing thing that wants access gets a fair chance at it?

If I've understood correctly, how do I know how much any particular application; game, skype etc actually needs?

Also, if I say give 50% to EvE and 50% to skype and skype is not on, does that mean EvE has 100% or will it be limited to 50%?

Lee

ps... thanks for the explanation.

Don't think the current superhub FW supports QoS.

You would need to run it in Modem mode with a separate router supporting QoS if you wanted it currently.
