Quick update on my Canyon, just got a call from home, it arrived back to me today, looking forward to building and getting back out on it! shame its a thunderstorm'in outside!

Good news mate. Look forward to a proper ride report :)

Are you turning it the correct way? Non-drive side is left hand thread so clockwise to loosen. Use the bolt & washer/spacer to keep the wrench in place as Jonny recommended.

non-drive side will be a normal thread loosening to the left. Drive side is left hand threaded loosening to the right.

The axle rotates forward, the bearings reverse this and push the cup to the read of the bike tightening it.

I hate this style of bb!

I've found boiling water from a kettle can help loosen it off.

i don't have a vice sadly :/ ill try the boiling water trick and ill get a bigger adjustable wrench ? which might help! if not ill take it to my local BS

thanks.

Hello all,

I have had my new Specialized Allez Compact 2013 road bike for a week now and am thoroughly enjoying riding to and from work (so much so I actually missed cycling today due to the rain.....not got my rain gear yet). Its only 3 miles each way but hoping to do some more miles after work by joining the Fallowfield Loop (I live in south Manchester)...

Anyway! to the point ! Basically I will be getting an iPhone 4 soon and am interested in hooking this up to my bike with a case/bar attachment and perhaps a dynamo so it is constantly charged/doesnt loose battery....I was thinking of using this with a cycling ap for (eventually) longer rides (I have visions next summer of cycling from South Manchester across to my parents home in South West Sheffield at the weekend.....thinking the ride will be beautiful on a summers day ... (the 1 or 2 we actually have! )) so I was wondering if anyone here can suggest or advise on if this setup is a good idea .... as oppose to a GPS computer.

Can anyone recommend/link to the equipment needed.....I think it would just be

Dynamo pack/Case/Handlebar/stem attachment for phone/case

thanks guys....enjoying reading through these posts abouts people ventures...really enthusiastic about taking up cycling a bit more than just commuting to and from work :))

Can't help on iPhone stuff sorry - my Galaxy S and Galaxy Note both have more than enough battery for a full day riding with Strava running. If battery is marginal I just knock off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPRS and put it into flight mode - but I'm not sure if you can do that and still have Strava running on the iPhone.

If I need actual GPS (you'd be surprised, I don't very often) then I just turn GPRS back on.

Enjoy the Allez, I tested an Allez Sport before I bought my bike and I quite liked it :)

That lot would cost as much if not more than a proper GPS - my iPhone bar mount was about £40 and is one of the better ones you can get and to be honest it wasn't that good. A smartphone is quite a big lump to have on your bars both in so far as actually securing the weight, and it getting in the way.

I paid £110 from Evans for a Bryton Rider 40 GPS with a heart rate monitor which I'm really pleased with so far. There are cheaper Brytons too I think the 20 is supposed to be pretty good too.

The Garmin Edge 200 is about £110 as well but I went for the Bryton because it can do heart rate and speed sensors etc which the 200 can't.

no idea how long the iphone 4 would last on just a full charge with it running strava (is strava something that would guide me along the correct roads to my destination ?)....I am just presuming that if I did 5-6 hours cycling that it would not last the whole duration.....perhaps I am wrong though.

I've just done some searching on ebay and it looks like you can easily pay north of £100 for a dynamo and mount. And then you have to pedal against a dynamo.

Strava is for logging routes, not for guiding you.

For guidance, you'd use the maps, or a proper GPS.

I'd really be looking at a proper GPS unit if I were you.

I could get a good 80 miles of pedalling in with Cyclemeter & Strava running simultaneously on a full battery on my iPhone 4. I would normally check my email a couple of times during breaks too.

Strava wouldn't guide you.

With most of the GPS units you can have it guide you on a breadcrumb trail that you make on the computer and load onto it, which will get you there, but for proper navigation the Bryton Rider 50 will do it, the Garmin Edge 800 and 705 as well.

Still probably cheaper and certainly better than using the phone :)

Yay, my lights should be arriving today, got a couple of those Fibre Flex things and a Tracer 700 (trade price as we sell them :D ). I don't think biking in this wind would be too fun, and I've got a tile floor to lay. :-/

Funnily enough we are in an identical situation, we are living near Stockport now and my parents live in Totley. It's a nice ride and easy to navigate - take the A6 out from Manchester to the final roundabout before the dual carriageway and take the right to Whaley Bridge. Follow the signs for Chapel-en-le-Frith then from there head to Castleton, Hope and Hathersage before Sheffield (all on the same road).

I've got a Garmin Edge 705 now but my phone was fine before for the occasional map check and Strava on rides of that length.

I managed to put my Canyon back together last night and thought id give it a quick check

Looking at the rear mech, when set to the biggest cog at the back, the limiter screw was well off, probably about 5 or 6mm, im pretty sure this isnt right so i looked in the manual and Shimano say the limiter screw is supposed to be touching the stop! same for on the smallest cog. If this is left as it is, i guess its highly possible the mech will go into the spokes again? maybe this is what happened in the first place?

Ah wonderful thankyou for the route, I've mapped it on google maps and sent it myself for future reference, will be sure to use this route :)

Most people seem to think GPS is the way forward then...But I think I might trial things with just the iPhone 4 first (on its own) and see how I get on...and then look to purchase a GARMIN GPS if I want to do more adventurous routes.

Whilst Strava doesnt plot route and allow me to follow directions, I can always plot these on google maps....or Apple Maps when they have sorted them out on iOS6 ;) and keep switching between the two to see if I am on the right track right ?

thanks for all your help

My Garmin 500 is fantastic, couldn't be doing messing around with the phone every time i want to go for a ride, good price too at the moment, £220ish with both sensors.

Makes my edge 800 with sensors + euro maps for £260 a mega bargain then :)
