Name an adventure game similar to the likes of Zelda etc.

Which Zelda?

Because I've evidently not played the latest ones - my first thought was "get a SNES emulator and play Secret of Mana - it's amazing" but I think I'm thinking of the wrong Zelda...

Breath of fire 3 on ps1 or breath of fire 4 which is on pc are alright but turn based rather than real time fighting. Oh! Recettear! Get that on steam it's amazing.

Fable The Lost Chapters is the closest to Zelda I can think of on PC, played it many moons ago but remember it being an enjoyable game.

The Zelda games are quite unique and are probably best described as action adventure with emphasis on puzzles/dungeon crawling, Fable is more of an action/rpg so can't really be compared to Zelda gameplay wise. The main similarity which comes to mind is that you start both games as a boy and progress through adolesence to adulthood. Might be worth a shot anyway, Steam have The Lost Chapters for 6.99 at the moment.

Most of the games mentioned share a passing similarity at best, by far the closest you can get to Zelda is Darksiders 1/2, because they effectively are Zelda games with the addition of a far more complex combat system. They're both outstanding games and I can't recommend them enough.

If you're a fan of the old snes style Zelda have you tried the early Final Fantasy games? (1 to 6)
Highly recommended! (and nothing much like the later more famous ones)

Even better would be Secret of Mana (and to a much lesser extent Secret of Evermore). There's also a fan translation of SoM2; Seiken Densetsu 3 iirc.

The only decent zelda game was a link to the past imo. Still hard to find somit like it. Darksiders was said to be like zelda which i just cant really see, it has some aspects of a zelda game but it probably was compared to the crap 3d zelda games and not the classic 2d ones.

Secret of mana i did try but i duno i just couldnt get into it, was very similar tho but like i said i couldnt get into it as it was zelda :(

Oh and them Y Origin and other Y games on steam are a bit like zelda, not as good but about as close as you can get to 2d hack and slash with a Japanese theme to it.

Hmm 3d dot game heroes, is that a mix of games because i notice something from rygar on the nes on a utube vid of it.

The red stone area with boulders coming down this is identical to rygar in a part of the game. But you are right its very zelda even the chickens i loved to smack about is in there. Shame i dont have a ps3 and shame its made of blocks as that looked naff imo.

Well as you say Darksiders is specifically like the 3d Zelda's however that's no bad thing in my book, Ocarina of time is one of my all time favourite games...

Same, incredible game and the kind of game i'm referring to. :D However the game boy 2d zelda games are epic also.

I am going to try darksiders, its £14.99 on steam and by the looks of it a lot of people have got it cheap so I guess i'll have to wait for it to arrive in a sale.

Darksider games are heavily influenced by Zelda in terms of structure and gameplay. Good games, but very GRIMDARK.

Batman (particularly Asylum) shares this mechanic.

Personally, I think both are more influenced by Metroid / Castlevania.

Psychonauts is a great shout. Plays pretty good on a modern PC.

My suggestion would be Alice.
