What did you replace it with? Are you glad you changed?

I'm currently pondering what could be the replacement for mine, and what path to take, without spending a fortune, and am curious as to the upgrade path others have taken.

Thanks!

What would you want from a change? Any particular areas you'd like to improve on?

The ST220 is known to be an excellent all-rounder so my initial thoughts draw a blank.

That's the problem. It's a very good all rounder. The problem is, I kinda miss the fun aspect of the MX5. So I'm in two schools of ponderous thought about the Mondeo's replacement, either:

Something more "fun" but retaining a lot of the creature comforts I've grown accustomed to (leather, climate, xenons, electric everything etc), i.e.:

Mini Cooper S
Golf GTI
Honda S2000
Mk3 MX5

Or something of an evolution of the Mondeo, i.e.:

Audi S4
BMW something with more power

But the latter group is too expensive for me at the moment.

Or a 350Z. I like them.

I suppose I need to drive these cars to see if I'll like them. I'm just wondering where people "went" afterwards

isnt a cooper s broadly comparable with an ST220 performance wise, i know it isnt far off a 330ci, which is broadly similar to an ST220

They're nice enough cars. Just completely different to the Mondeo. In fact I would go as far as to say you'd miss the refinement.

I very much enjoyed my MINI, and they are generally speaking great fun to drive plus they are cheap enough these days.

I know they're different. I kinda want different. I miss "chuckability". Although the Mondeo is very good at hiding its size...

Just how unrefined are they on motorways for longer journeys? Can't be nearly as bad as the S2000 surely?

You can't possibly change from an ST220. It's the best allrounder for the price. Whatever you change it to you'll be disappointed! :)

As you know I'm now in a CTR which I do really like but it's ****ing RAW compared to the ST220 and it doesn't have as many toys. My main advice would be to buy something with similar levels of equipment.

If I were you I'd possibly upgrade to some form of BMW. 5 Series or 3 Series M Sport.

This probably won't be for at least a year or two down the line, but I have my eyes set on either a 335i or an Jag XF.

I must say I found the 350Z to be really good for motorway (well, I used it for ~10miles dualie, same idea :p) cruising in 6th and then great to chuck about on twisties too.
What I didn't like about it though is the adaptive/dampened steering as it changes all the time and one corner I'd throw it in with ease, another corner the same and I'd have to He-Man it round the corner almost. It seemed to adjust itself to whatever it felt like doing rather than keeping it consistent.
It also hides the speed extremely well I found, you can easily be in license losing territory and only really know by glancing down at the speedo.

Good fun for a blast but I'm not sure I'd own one myself.

I was also informed that the boot is very small, despite what it seems like, there is minimal space to put stuff due to strut brace and all sorts of plastic linings etc.

Not bad at all actually, but the ride is what puts what people off. It's a rather stiff car from the factory.

Very very chuckable though :D

I don't mind it stiff (;) ) as the ST220 is hardly a wafter and the ride of the MX5 wasn't the issue on long journeys.

Peter, the equipment levels are what I am not looking to lose too much of, hence the Mini, as it is very well equipped.

I drove a CTR a while ago and was rather underwhelmed.

I enjoyed the 350Z I drove but you can feel its weight. It's got a wonderful engine with a fair bit more grunt than the Mondeo and looks fantastic though. And they're great value.

I would like an E93 330 or 335 coupe but I can't afford one yet.

I have no idea what I want :/

I went from my ST200 to a Z4 3.0si, didn't need the practicality anymore and wanted something a bit sportier but keeping some of the creature comforts. Ride comfort is comparable, plenty of choice of 3.0 models from maybe £6k to £10k+, convertible or coupe :).

I'm also thinking that the step up would be something like an M Sport 3 series. Maybe a 335i?

Or an M3? :p
