Get what sounds good to you, who cares what anyone else thinks.
Haven't used tone controls on an amp for many years, present amp doesn't have any...oh dear, does that make me a snob?

Get what sounds good to you, who cares what anyone else thinks.

The listener in this case claimed to be an audiophile (who runs his own business selling top end hifi gear) who offered to pay anyone's travel costs who could prove to him that he could not hear the difference between a cheap but well made amplifier and his own reference grade amplifier. He paid the guys travel expenses. End of story.
In what way does it cause you offence if someone pays big money for a reference grade component and states that it has enhanced their enjoyment of music. What crime have they committed?

Someone shows you their new shirt, they tell you it makes them like 70% sexier and adds an air of mystery. You might leave them to their delusion.
They then tell you how it cost them £1500 and is supposedly made from esoteric materials, such as Laotian turtle fur, in a penthouse on top of a volcano. Again, you leave them to their delusions, even though they've been ripped off and lied to.
Later on you see them talking to your gullible friend who then tells you he's convinced and is going to get one. Do you still leave it?
It's a scam industry, top to bottom. People are getting lied to and buying snake oil, and the ones that do help to further this. As a result it's harder to convince someone that a £1 HDMI cable does the same thing as a £100 one, than it is the other way around.
But hey, if you're completely laissez-faire that's cool, but don't criticise the critics because that's a bit ironic, no?
Only from the start he was told to listen to what he enjoys. It is only you evangelical fags that are coming on here trying to convince people that they are saying something they aren't.
Yes some of us enjoy expensive kit but none of us have told him to go out and buy any, only to listen to kit he gets the most enjoyment from, be it an av amp with sub or a Walkman. That some of us disagree with him is neither here nor there as we aren't trying to sell him anything nor trying to convince him otherwise.
That some of you are so emotionally inadequate, that you insist to try and be the big man and force feed us your belief is pathetic. Stop being such a loser and actually read what's being said, instead of what you want to be said, just because then you can get on your soapbox and try to prove what a real man you are when you obviously aren't.

Why on earth have you replied to me with such silly insults; Touched some nerve? No, I don't even care. It's amusing since you use the words "evangelical" and "belief" to someone talking about what is factual. And I'll refer you to the last line of what you quoted.
You're welcome to e-thug again.

What is factual? The only factual thing in this thread was people telling the OP to listen to what he likes the sound of, although the premise of the OP was to bait anyway.
No one here was trying to sell the idea that the OP had to buy any expensive kit yet the idiots come out the woodwork giving their nuggets of "facts". Why bother trying to insult people here insinuating they are gullible when all they were saying was to listen to what they enjoy as people prefer different things. Not that it matters because you just had to enlighten everyone all the same with your "factual" information.
As for the last line of your post, I'm not criticising the critic, because your arguement was based on something that was never said to begin with.![]()
You are the only one insulting people here.
By the way, you want the single inverted comma when trying to be smart, not the double.

@bear - If you're offended by people posting facts then the internet must be a very unhappy place for you. We are not discussing belief systems either.
Amplifiers are a product of scientific knowledge, without science and the scientific method our interest in home hifi wouldn't exist. There wouldn't be such thing as an Amplifier.
If I post something you disagree with feel free to post a counter argument .... rather than insults. Actually feel free to post insults, it aids my argument
I don't post the links and views I have done to troll the snake oil believers I'm posting to offer those that are sat on the fence an alternative to the rubbish that's written in most hifi mags and manufacturers advertising .... (the guys who'll tell you what you want to hear in a hope of getting your money).
Anyway, I don't want a cheap amp, the amp I want needs to be well built and built to last, and the longer the warranty the better. It needs to be able to drive my speakers at the levels I like to listen at without clipping or distortion. I also want it to look good ... so I'm willing to pay a little more for asthetics. I can pick any good manufacturer these days and be safe in the knowledge that the basic amp design within their product is tried and tested. It works. And as long as it satisfies the criteria above I need not worry about what it sounds like because they all sound the same. Neutral. Just like they should be.
If you want to improve your sound buy new speakers. If they are expensive make sure you demo them at home in the room you intend to use them rather than the sound treated sonically awesome room the dealer has![]()
Really? You really aren't very bright are you. The premise of the thread was to insult anyone that didn't agree with him as a snob.
Perhaps if you spent more time reading the thread instead of trying to convince everyone how enlightened you are, you might have realised it.
Been trying to workout that one myself, every time some kit of any value/cost is mentioned it gets jumped on by the sceptics who seem to feel it's their duty to save the world and campaign against it.....
I'm sure there are many products and pleasure we could claim to be over priced etc..... For example I don't understand the need upgrade a camera every year a new model comes out, or each time Apple brings out a new phone.... but plenty do so good for them, hope they enjoy.

So... are you really trying to save us from ourselves, in the way you might try to save someone who had fallen under the influence of some wieird cult and been brainwashed by them???
Can I ask you and the other cynics a question? Have you ever listened to your favourite music on a system that is more specialist, or more higher end than your own?
If I see people posting false information on a forum I'm a member of I'll call them on it. The delusional people, liars and conspiracy nutters get called out everywhere else on the forum. Likewise people who are mistaken are corrected. Why is audio off limits?
Wouldn't call myself a cynic. I mean would you regard yourself as a religious cynic or think that you're clearly right because of facts and science (assuming like most people about here you're non-religious)?
I've listened to and owned a lot of expensive gear (calling it high-end or specialist would kind of defeat my point). On top of actual experience I've also read the science, tests, and applied common sense. I still spend a ton on audio, in the past month I've dropped maybe £1400 on IEM's alone, I just spend on what actually makes difference. It's a lot more enjoyable to know what actually makes a difference so you can focus on that; As opposed to wondering what speaker cables, wall plugs and amplifier stands will give you more soundstage and of course you can hardly afford to try them all, and some you could never afford.
