Hi,

I purchased a pair of Karrimor walking boots 3 weeks ago from Sports Direct, my local store, not an online purchase. They have had very light use around town and yesterday I noticed the heel is coming away slightly from the upper at the back. There is a distinct gap there which looks to me like a fault.

However, I cannot for the life of me find the receipt which is annoying as I usually keep receipts for recent purchases. The purchase shows up on my bank statement but that's about all the proof of purchase I have. Is that enough to request an exchange for an identical replacement pair of boots?. I'm thinking it is going by some articles I've read online, there seems to be a distinction between the need for receipts etc when it comes to returning an item that is faulty rather than something that you either just don't like or isn't the correct size?. I don't want a refund or anything, I'd be more than satisfied with a straight replacement.

Planning on heading over to the store this afternoon but just wanted to see if there was anyone here that had any useful info I could go armed with, so to speak. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Pile of crap these Karrimor boots.

I've used a bank statement before in Boots and they accepted that, you should be fine but they might be awkward about it.

Funnily enought, i have the same problem with with a pair of karrimor trainers from SD where the front sole has become detached and I have no receipt, had them for a bit longer than 3 weeks tho.

Good to hear. I bought the boots purely for 'urban' or general use, not for trail walking as I don't count that as a hobby to be honest. However after padding about town on pavements for a couple of weeks I wouldn't expect the sole to start coming away from the upper whether they were Karrimor or Scarpa's!!. :)

Yes, you have a proof of purchase (your bank statement), it's as simple as that. A receipt is nothing more than another form of proof of purchase but legally speaking it carries no more weight than a bank statement.

Used to work in customer services for a retail store when I was at Uni, we'd even accept cheque stubs as proof of purchase even though that's easy to forge.

Karrimor are duff.

Are the bad boys I recommend, see if you can exchange.

Had two pairs in three years and they're so hardy. Bearing in mind I work on a farm and (usually) wear them 10 hours a day - 5 days a week through mud, water and poo. Other colleagues buy various other brands and their footwear is usually dead by 6 months. I never "maintain" them either, so for just walking in and if you looked after them (polish etc) I imagine they'd last you many years easy.

Thanks estebanrey, appreciate the info.

I've got a pair of good La Sportiva Goretex boots that I've had for a few years and have stood up to all sorts being thrown at them. As I said though, these Karrimors were just for pottering about town, but thanks for the link anyway Tom0. :)

Karrimor used to be good until they went bust, real shame. My current pair of them (KSB 300) were from the old company, still going after 5 years.

Hi-Tec suck, this is from heavy experience with the brand. Buy something good like some Trezetta or Salomon etc. Avoid Berghaus - good jackets, poor boots. End of the day, get what's comfortable, but do consider the quality of what you're buying.

Most importantly, treat them properly by keeping them clean. When it comes to tending to the outer shell, if its GoreTex or similar don't go slapping wax on, you'll ruin them - buy something designed for the lining. Also, don't just buy leather upper under the false pretense what it's water proof or better than suede - it is not. I'd avoid Nubuk on anything that's not a light hiking show as it will get tatty very quickly.

afaik they won't replace them if you wore them.. :/

As far as I am led to believe if the product is not fit for purpose i.e. it has developed a fault, they should replace them irrespective if they have been worn or not. My issue is however compounded by the fact that I have not kept hold of the original packaging or receipt which makes things slightly more complex than just taking them back boxed up and in the SD carrier bag they came in on the day I purchased them.

I bought some Merrill's from Black's and they insisted I take the box otherwise they wouldn't accept a return. Who really wants to keep the box for twelve months?

I've had a karrimor backpack for the last 10 years and i swear the thing is bulletproof.

Shame that they've taken such a dive in quality.

Hope you get a replacement sorted OP.

There was a design fault with the mixture for the sole at Karrimor, they use 2 types, the K and the R, the K's are usually fine and should not give any problems it's usually the R's that split or break-away, you can check which type you have as the K's are marked on the underneath of the 'arch', the R's have no marking here, so you can tell if you have the K or R, once you know for certain you have the R just phone wherever you got it from and tell them you have an R sole, should be no problems then. :)
