On topic - yes he has ruined his life, and for the foreseeable future the life of his wife also.

To me his actions were madness. Perhaps that is the point? It has been mentioned by previous posters that there is a possibility that he is not sound of mind.

Afterall, what sane person would think this would end up in any other way than it did?

I know 'love' has made many a man do crazy things before. Perhaps, as with Romeo and Juliet, they were two star-crossed lovers? Stranger things have happened.
