Help!! No signs of life...

Hi all,

Hoping for a bit of help here... Have just rebuilt my old system (specs in sig) with the Gigabye Z77x-UP4, Samsung green memory and a 3570k, and nothing is happening when I hit the power button. Unfortunately I'm studying abroad (and my PC is with me), so phoning OCUK is not a great option. Any help would be appreciated as I'm rather stuck for ideas. On turning the power on at the mains and on the PSU, nothing lights up - I'm used to mobo's which have had an LED light come on to indicate that the power was there. I don't know whether this board should have something similar. Otherwise I've checked all the connections and done everything I can think of. Everything else worked perfectly before... Can't imagine the RAM is at fault, and presumably a dud CPU would be highly unlikely...

Any help would be seriously appreciated!!!

are your power/reset switches back to front? you say you have just re-built it, iv done it a few times with my own
 
The case doesn't have a reset switch. The power switch connector is definitely in the right place, and I've tried it both way rounds since I was unsure which was the +ve and the -ve. Nothing either way!
 
theres no onboard leds on that board

are you plugging the ram in the grey slots? and does the fan twitch and then spin up?
 
Ok, good to know about the leds. Ram is in the grey slots, and nothing from the fans. There isn't any sign of anything happening anywhere when I press the power button :(
 
take off the front panel power switch and cross the two pins that are marked red on the board(as in short them with a flat blade screwdriver)

you only need to touch both pins at the same time,then see if it powers up

Tried it and nothing happened... Not even a twitch...

do you have a spare psu to test? i know gigabyte can be picky

could pop out the cmos battery for 30mins and then try
 
There maybe a light near the dualBIOS chips to indicate which one is in use (there is on my UP5)

Try and build outside of the case on cardboard.

Use the board without a GFX card.

Use a single stick of RAM

Disconnect ALL drives.

Use a metal screwdriver to short the two power pins in the front panel header on the board.

Right, will try this and will reseat the CPU at the same time. I'll report back when done. Thanks again!
 
Ok... I disconnected everything from the motherboard, leaving only CPU and RAM, and it started up fine. It's only when I added the hard drives that it went on the blink. Plugging anything into any of the SATA ports (whether SATA2 or SATA3) would produce the same result: computer trying to power on and then immediately turning off. It makes no difference what I plug in or when regarding the SATA ports, but as soon as there is something plugged in it doesn't boot up. Does that mean a faulty board or is there something I'm missing?

Hi again,

Further to yesterday, I have since removed the motherboard from the case. As before, I was able to boot up with only the CPU and RAM in place. Even plugging in a monitor prevented a boot. I then removed one of the sticks of RAM, and this enabled me to boot up with a monitor, ssd and keyboard all plugged in. It still worked after swapping the sticks around. However once I switched the computer off, trying to boot again with the same configuration becomes impossible. If I clear the CMOS I am able to boot once, but after switching off and trying to switch on again, the computer will turn on for a fraction of a second before switching off, and this continues until the CMOS is cleared again. I have also successfully updated the BIOS to the F7 version available from Gigabyte, but this made no difference to the pattern of behaviour.

I'm really confused now... Dead mobo? :(
 
I had a similar problems with my system not booting up, when I bought my new case which made me think either the motherboard was dead or the case I/O panel was screwed.

Have you made sure nothing is shorting the motherboard, I see you took it out the case, was anything touching the motherboard beforehand like the mounting screws on the case? That's what caused my problems as I left one of them on the case and it gave very similar behavior to what you are having, but outside the case as long as nothing shorting the board, you could have a dead board.

No loose screws fell onto the board and latched themselves onto something? Wild guess but I've also seen that before.

Thanks for that but no, there's no way it's shorting now since I took it out of the case. I don't understand why it seems to be alright once it starts, when it manages to do so... Some more fiddling around this afternoon methinks...
 
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I since returned this motherboard to OCUK (who diagnosed it as faulty), and having bought another I am having the same problems.

In short, when pressing the power button, the system powers on for a mo and then switches off. I have done everything suggested above and by OCUK - reseated CPU, used 1 RAM stick and swapped them round, disconnected VGA/drives/everything possible, checked for shorts, and nothing changes...

I'm using an i5-3570k and Samsung Green 1600Mhz. Could it at all be the CPU?! Anyone with experience, please bring it to bear!! Thanks!!
 
doesnt fan twitch or spin? try with using onboard vga or dvi connection

plugged in cpu 4 or 8 pin and motherboard 24 pin power connectors from psu?
